Chinese Wedding and Civil Wedding Ceremonies

September 6 2003

As it is tradition in a Chinese Family, Christopher and I followed the Chinese wedding traditions on the 6th September with our family and close friends.

We both had our 'camps', the ladies who are called my 'aunties' and the men who are called Christopher's 'uncles'. Their role were to help us; the Aunties were to ascertain the strength of Christopher's love and determination to 'get me' whilst the Uncles were to help Christopher 'get me'.

And so, at 7.30 am, the ladies gathered early at the house, to plot out their 'battle' plan. They'd scripted out a few questions to gruel my dear ole husband-to-be to see how much he knows about me/us. The questions were :

1. What is Karena's favorite food?

2. When and Where did Karena and yourself have your first kiss?

3. What is Karena's shoe size?

4. When and Where did Karena and yourself have your first date?

5. Which primary/junior school did Karena attend?

6. What clothes were Karena wearing when you had your first date?

7. What was the first dish that Karena cook for you?

8. How many necklaces do Karena have?

And whilst they were preparing for battle, I had to twiddle my tomb and wait.... anxiously waiting.

Here's handsome Chris all decked out in his lovely blue jacket (brings out the color of his eyes!) and red hat, arriving at the gates at 8.00 am. He is with his uncles and he's trying to charm the aunties... no go.....
And so the battle began between the men and the ladies. For every question they got wrong, they had to be 'punished'.

In the end, they got 3 questions wrong, and 3 of Christopher's 'uncles' sacrificed themselves and submitted to the punishment as inflicted by my aunties.

Jesse had lipstick, Eric had nail varnish and Jonathan had eye make-up all applied on them. They did look quite 'pretty' ! :)
And so, they got through the gates.... ah but wait... not so fast, that was only stage 1. Next stage, Christopher had to sing out a song (written by my aunties) whilst his uncles 'animated' for him. This was easy, for Christopher is such a good singer (and such a ham too :))
And here's the boy's definition of helping Christopher animate!
Final test, Christopher had to crawl towards me, with a rose in his mouth and a book balanced on his head. He 'cheated' and had Nicholas holding onto the book behind him!
And he finally 'gets' me... with a rather 'pathetic' withered flower bouquet.. (the florist had forgotten to open up on time and so one of the 'uncles' created an emergency bouquet, using flowers from the public roadside flower bed!

Now that he has 'gotten' to me, we go through the tea ceremonies where we serve tea to our respective families so that first, we thank our parents for bringing us up so far and for them to welcome the new 'member' into the family.
