How smart are these octopi?
Gee, this question sounds scientific. How are you supposed to answer scientific questions? Graphs, of course!

Here's a graph depicting the average intelligence of the Carnivorous Tree Octopi species as a whole.

The Y-axis values represent how intelligent the octopi are in relationship to humanity's intelligence. As you can see, at the year 2004, octopi are only about 300 times smarter than us. That means that if an average guy meets an average octopus, he's 300 times dumber than the cephalopod. Not only that, but he's dead meat.

The X-axis, clearly, is time.

Judging by the graph, octopi are going to be about eight hundred times smarter than we are in early 2005. This isn't just exponential growth; it's like an exponent to a power of somethin' to a power of somethin' else! I mean, we are royally screwed.

There is no doubt in my mind that we'll be seeing octopi zipping around in spaceships before long. Actually, perhaps we won't, because they should've been doing it by now. Maybe they're down-to-Earth animals. Or up-in-tree animals! A little light-hearted humor before we all die at the tentacles of our worst nightmares.

Could they really be a million smart?
