| In December 2005, I resigned from Medtronic in protest for Medtronic's violations of the law and because Medtronic was not sufficiently testing their new Concerto implant. I tried to help Medtronic quietly resolve the issues, but was rebuffed. After a patient injury occured, Medtronic again refused to provide evidence and I was forced to go public. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Some think I am a disgruntled former Medtronic engineer. In fact, I know Medtronic has saved many lives over the years and that they are in markets in which only they provide a therapy at a loss because if they didn't do it many would suffer. I applaud Medtronic's successes and generosity, but great accomplishments do not excuse harm to one human life caused by shortcuts in product evaluations. I believe the majority of employees at Medtronic are very intelligent, hard working, honest and good people. Part of the problem is that Medtonic has ventured into a new technology they do not fully understand. Like most large bureaucratic companies, Medtronic has been slow to adapt to the new technology. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Disclaimer: I have not stated that Medtronic's Concerto implants are unsafe. My concern is for how Medtronic performed tests to verify safety and functionality. Medtronic had not tested the Concerto sufficiently to verify the device is safe when I resigned. I am also concerned for Medtronic's willingness to comply with laws in the countries in which Medtronic does business.
