Vala
couldn't stop herself from staring at her hands. The fingers
were longer than she was used to, and the words flowed swiftly
from the pen without any input from her. "I still can't
believe this happened to me," she said out loud, and the pen
halted.
"It happened to us."
"I know,"
she said. "I'm sorry I dragged you into this."
"You
couldn't have known."
There was silence for a long
moment. "I wish I could've given birth to my child first,"
Vala said at last, her voice trembling. "It's something I've
always..." She stopped. "I don't even know who killed my
body."
Arms wrapped around her. "I may not act like it,
but I don't mind sharing with you."
"Be honest with
me," she pleaded. "If you had a choice, would you do this for
me?"
"In a heartbeat." There was another pause, less
awkward this time. "You have been a terrific pain in the ass
sometimes, but that year you spent out there changed you.
You've started a whole new life, and I'm proud of you. This
can't be easy for you either, but you've put up with it
without complaining. I can't think of many people who could do
what you've done, and I really don't mind giving you a place
to live."
She smiled faintly. "Thank you,
Daniel."
Mitchell poked his head around the door. "Hey
Jackson, Vala! We're going for lunch. Wanna tag
along?"
"Sure," they agreed. Daniel put his pen down
and stood, letting Vala stretch his legs out. As they left
Daniel's office, Vala mused that being stuck in his body
wasn't too bad after all.
