Death is swallowed up in victory...1Corinthians 15:51-54
by Timothy W. Burnett
In the present series on 1Cornithians chapter 15 we arrive at the part where we learn some special details about the future event known as the day of Christ. This dynamic event should not be confused with the notable day of the Lord. Verses 51-54 describe the time when Jesus Christ will draw the born-again Christians up into the clouds with him. On the day of the Lord, he will actually be standing on the earth or ground. The two events are distinct from each other.

Starting with 1Corinthians 15:50, Now, this I say, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. Neither does corruption inherit incorruption. This sets the context for verses 51-54. It is impossible for people to inherit the power from the Kingdom of God. Likewise it is impossible for corruptible bodies to inherit incorruptible bodies. Our bodies are made of flesh and blood passed down from Adam, which eventually die. They do not automatically put on incorruptible bodies unto everlasting life. But God gave the solution to this problem. Be filled with holy spirit and get born-again not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible by the word of God which lives and abides forever. The first record of people fulfilling this is found in
Acts 2:4 where they were filled with holy spirit and began to speak in tongues.

Now lets dive in to the exciting details of that future day of Christ, Behold, I show you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump. For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed (verses 51-52). It was a mystery before, but was no longer a mystery after being revealed. On that day some will still be alive while others will be dead. Those who are alive will be changed into new heavenly bodies and the dead will be raised from a corruptible dead state to an incorruptible living state with new bodies also. The trumpet does not literally refer to the instrument, but figuratively refers to a fanfare. It is often used in reference to celestial events. Its possible that the meaningful position of the stars will fanfare this event just as they did for the birth of Jesus Christ.

For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory (verses 53-54). Corruptible bodies are dead and will put on incorruptible living bodies at that time. Mortal bodies are temporarily living and will be changed into new bodies that will not die. According
1Thessalonians 4:15 the dead will rise before the living are changed. This event will fulfill the prophecy, Death is swallowed up in victory.
