| Guard Your Heart... By Timothy W. Burnett |

| You ever had one of those days? People around you seem to be against you. Maybe you feel like those who really love you only want to make life miserable for you. Things just feel disjointed and empty? Or unexplainable fear and insecurity is building up inside? How about those horrible feelings of depression and inadequacy which eat away inside your tender heart because someone you love seems to despise you. And those churning feelings of anger and bitterness that flare out from within? These are all very real feelings and thoughts within those who are in need of healing. This kind of healing can only come by letting God's words of love and life live in the heart and mind. God is a pretty good authority of our hearts and minds...considering that He designed mankind. God's will for everybody is to be healed. How do we know this? Just go to His word. It is written, "...by whose stripes ye were healed" (1Peter 2:24). This is past tense. Every single scrape and rip across our Lord's body was for our healing. But those stripes have no meaning except that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead and sat him at His own right hand of all authority. Now all people who simply change their minds and believe that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead can be made righteous, which is to be filled with holy spirit. This is what it means to be cleased by the blood of the Lamb. So how does this relate to all the mental pain and suffering mentioned above? Many people believe that God raised our Lord from the dead, but very few commit themselves to loving God with all their hearts, minds, soul and strength. They know what Christ did for all of mankind, but they don't know how to tap into the healing that became available. Here is a basic truth to understanding our feelings and actions, "Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23). Why is it important to God that we guard our hearts? What is it about our hearts that is so important? God's got the answers right there in the same verse, "...for out of it are the issues of life." The issues of life come out of the heart. This includes those deep mental pains and feelings. This includes the actions and decisions we make. The word heart is a figure of speech where the organ is put for the inner seat of life, or the inner depths of the mind. In the field of Psychology, the closest thing I have seen to God's word on this subject is the "schemata." Some Psychologists consider this to be the deep subconscious out of which our life's decisions, actions and feelings come. But let us stay focused on God's perfect word. When we love God with our whole heart, mind, soul and strength we guard our hearts. He made it so simple for us. Or should I say, we complicated it to the point that we are unable to see its simplicity. So what does it mean to love God? According to John 4:24, "God is spirit..." He cannot be touched or seen by people. Truth is we know God by His word. To love God is to love His rightly divided word. What a fantastic package that is available to anybody. It is right there in the Bible. We have all at some time heard the saying, "You get out of it, what you put into it." Those who devote a great deal of time in reading, studying, meditating on and practicing God's word will get the dynamic good results God promised. It is also true that what we put into our minds and hearts is what will issue out of our lives. Why? Because out of the heart are the issues of life. Here is some food for healing, "Be anxious for nothing. But in everything by prayer and supplication, with giving of thanks, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace from God, which surpasses all understanding, absolutely shall guard your hearts and thoughts through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). |
