Alcatraz Links
I first developed an interest in Alcatraz Island in high school. We were assigned a project where we had to describe how we would escape from Alcatraz if we were inmates there. I was clueless about Alcatraz, so a friend got me to watch the movie "The Rock" with Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage. It's a cool movie about a hostage taking on Alcatraz. After watching the movie, I became interested in finding out more about Alcatraz, which led to the creation of this page on my website. Enjoy the links!!
Alcatraz Island Prison in San Francisco Bay
- http://www.inetours.com/Pages/SFNbrhds/Alcatraz.html
This site was brought to my attention by Lee Nelson who shot over 60 panoramas in San Francisco over the last year, including two of Alcatraz Island. After checking the site out for myself, what can I say but WOW!!! The panoramas truly are a must-see, although you require QuickTime 4 or above to view them. Thanx for telling me about your link, Lee!
Alcatraz Official Web Page
- http://www.nps.gov/alcatraz/index.html
Probably one of the best Alcatraz sites there is, in my opinion. It's a government site (professionally made) so the layout and quality is excellent. Of course there's lots of info on the penitentiary, but this site also takes a look at the other different aspects of Alcatraz Island. It contains lots of information relating to Alcatraz's military history (1850-1933), the Indian Occupation of the island from November 1969 to June 1971, and the plants and animals that live on Alcatraz. There's plenty of information regarding planning a visit to Alcatraz. This site also provides online tours of the island and prison.
Alcatraz's Toolproof Bars
- http://www.nps.gov/alcatraz/tours/circ-nav/toolproof.html
This page is a part of the site listed above. It has an interesting description of the toolproof bars installed in the prison, and it describes exactly how they are "toolproof".

This page doesn't contain any written information on Alcatraz, just a few cool pictures.
Warden Johnston's Alcatraz: 1933 to 1948
- http://www.notfrisco2.com/alcatraz/index.html
Joel GAzis-SAx maintains a very interesting website devoted to Alcatraz during the Warden Johnston years (1934-1948) which contains extensive information on some specific areas (and is always adding more). Includes sections devoted to what's new on the site, chronology (a time line), prisoners, counts, maps, research, galleries (photos), tips for visitors to Alcatraz, and more. A really awesome site!!
The Alcatraz Gazette
