Welcome to first grade! It's an exciting year and your child will have lots of fun learning and growing as a student. Below is some information about our classroom activities and procedures. If you have any questions or comments throughout the year, please feel free to come in and talk with me.
Monday Folders- Every Monday your child will bring home a folder containing a weekly newsletter, classwork, letters from the office, and any forms that need to be filled out. There will also be a behavior calendar attached that will need to be initialed and returned in the folder the following day.
Homework Folders- Your child will bring home a homework folder every night that contains math homework, a book to read, notes from the office, or any other forms that need to be filled out. There will also be a Weekly Report attached that will need to be initialed every night and returned to school the following day.
Classroom Discipline- There are six rules your child will be asked to follow. If a rule is broken, the child will get a verbal warning and a strike card is put on their desk. If the behavior continues, the child will move the appropriate color crayon that represents the rule broken. Behavior is monitored and recorded each day and sent home in the Homework folder. Good behavior is rewarded with praise, prizes from the goodie box, and banana bucks.
Classroom Jobs- Students will be in charge of taking care of daily jobs in the classroom. The jobs will alternate and students will learn to become responsible and independent.
Parent/ Family Visitors- Visitors are always welcome to come spend time with the class. If you plan on having lunch with your child, please stop by the office to sign-in, get a visitor sticker, and meet us at the lunchroom. Please remember that fast food is against school policy. (Click on the monkey if you'd like the lunch time.)
Parent/ Adult Volunteers- If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, please let me know ahead of time what days and times you would like to come in and also what you'd be willing to help with. Throughout the year I will send home many notes asking for craft supplies or volunteers to come in and read or tutor. If you do volunteer your time, please remember to sign in at the office and get a visitor sticker before coming to the classroom.
Attendance- The school doors open at 8:15. Students can get breakfast or wait in the designated spot with their classmates until the first bell rings. When the bell rings at 8:35, students can enter the classroom and begin the morning routine. All students need to be in the room before the 8:45 tardy bell. If students arrive after the tardy bell, students will be asked to go the office to get a tardy slip. Punctuality is extremely important and sets the tone for the rest of the morning.
Birthdays- On each child's birthday, he or she will receive classroom goodies. If you would like to bring or send in cupcakes for your child's special day, we can celebrate and eat the treat during lunch. (Click on the monkey above for the lunch schedule.) If you would like to have a pizza party or some other type of party, please let me know ahead of time so we can plan our day appropriately.
