On-going work at home:
Speller's Choice Each Monday a 'Speller's Choice' sheet is sent home containing a list of the weekly spelling words and activities to participate in. When an activity has been completed, a parent/ guardian can initial next to it. When a student completes at least four activities (one a night), he or she can turn it in on Friday for extra banana bucks.
Word Wall At the beginning of the year, a word wall is sent home for your child to practice the weekly vocabulary words. Your child can write the five or six new words each week on his or her word wall. Have your child write down five words you say using the word wall. The object is for your child to be able to recognize the word and spell it correctly. Some students will become so familiar with the words that they will not need to look at the word wall. All the words are first grade sight words that should be mastered by the end of the year. Flash cards containing sight words and story words are sent home each week as well. Start a sight word box for safe keeping. Click the smiling banana for an on-line word wall to practice with. Still under construction.
Math Flash Cards As a new addition/ subtraction fact family is taught, a set of flash cards will be sent home for your child to practice with. Start a math fact box for safe keeping.
Reading Book/ Skill Sheet On Tues. & Thurs. night, students will bring home the weekly reading story in a hardback book to read. On Monday and Wednesday night, students will bring home a practice sheet that reviews previously taught literacy skills.
