Questions of the Heart (1/1) By Christina I did it. It finally happened. The last few hours were a blur. I had been stuck down in Johnson's cellar with four 'dead' FBI agents-only one dead for good. I huddled in a circle drawn hastily in salt. My arm in pain. Frank Black showed up. Then, Scully saved the world again. My Scully. A quick trip to the hospital for me. Scully reunited Frank with his daughter. They left. Scully and I were the only ones left in the ER waiting room. We stood there together, Scully and I, and watched the Millenium ball in silence. As "Auld Lang Syne" played, I looked over at Scully. She was staring intently at the screen. God, I love looking at her. So regal, so poised. The fire of her hair. The paleness of her skin. The long delicate line of her throat. She turned to me and I made up my mind. She must've expected it; she met me halfway. No bees, no look- alike Scully from the past, nothing to interrupt us. My head dipped down towards her and she turned her face up to me. It was exactly how I'd envisioned it. Her lips met mine in the softest of kisses, yet firm at the same time. Eyes closed, but I could see everything. We held that kiss, so chaste, so perfect. I dared not breathe; I wanted nothing to ruin this moment. When we finally ended the kiss, Scully gave me a small smile and a questioning tilt of her head. I smiled back. "The world didn't end?" A joke to cover up how I was reeling inside. "No, it didn't." A wistful look from Scully then. Did she expect more? Was she disappointed? "Happy New Year, Scully." Shit! Did I make it sound like the obligatory new year's kiss? Maybe I panicked, but I think I saw Scully's face fall the tiniest bit. "Happy New Year, Mulder." I slung my good arm over her shoulder and we left the hospital. Scully drove. We said nothing during the long drive back. I dozed on and off in the seat beside her, the events of the night and the painkillers pushing me to sleep. I thought on more than one occasion I heard Scully sigh softly. Scully left the engine running after pulling up to my apartment building. As I reached for the door handle, Scully stopped me by placing her hand over mine. She gave me a brief, tired smile. I looked for what I wanted to see there, but couldn't be sure. "Good night, Mulder." "Night, Scully." I pulled my hand from hers and left the car. I stood there on the sidewalk long after she had pulled away. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I couldn't sleep; my mind wouldn't shut down. I replayed it over and over in my mind, during the drive back and into the wee hours of morning. Mulder and I kissed. I roamed my apartment, emotionally restless. I was elated, hopeful. I was disappointed, dejected. If I could only be sure. If there was some way to look into Mulder and know his mind, know his heart. It was so perfect, our kiss. Pure. Did I see in Mulder's eyes what I felt in my heart? Or was I fooling myself, reading into an obligatory platonic kiss? The drive back was an eternity. Mulder seemed to be sleeping, if he heard my occasional befuddled sigh, he didn't let on. Oh, Mulder. We've been through so much these past six years. Could there be more for us? More than just the X-Files? Just past daybreak, I padded into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. I filled my kettle with water and placed it over the burner. As I reached into the cupboard for my favorite mug, I heard the knock at the door. I pulled the tie of my robe tighter around me, heart in my throat. It could only be one person. I checked the peephole, even though I "know" who it is. Six years on the X-Files have taught me the hard way. I opened my door. Mulder stood there before me, an apologetic grin on his face. His gaze intensified as my eyes sought the answer to the only truth I needed. I saw it there, in his eyes, mirroring what I could no longer hide in my own eyes, my own heart. "Mulder......" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We came together and got lost in each other's arms. I cupped her chin. I watched him lower his lips to mine. All our questions of the heart were answered.
