Time And Distance
Time And Distance is based out of West Virginia. Greg is made up of amazing qualities to make this one-man bad a totally wonderful experience. His lyrics are filled with passion, hear- break and the other tragedies that occur in a young persons life. He not some cheesy boy who whines about the stupid stuff in life I honestly feel that when he performs and sings music that other people live through his songs. They have this impeccable amount of meaning and he tries to show that its more about him and you than him and a guitar and lyrics he put together. All that is incorporated into this meaningful outlet of energy. Please he will be touring forever so check him out.
CHRISTINA: Name, age and respective instrument?
GREG: Greg Mcgowan, 18 years young, guitar / voice box
CHRISTINA: How did you become what you are?
GREG: Basically, I got kicked out of my old band because I was too serious, meaning I wanted to record / tour all the time, and they wanted to stay in West Virginia. So I started writing these songs, just for myself, and played a couple shows and people liked them. So I kept playing and kept writing, and then I did a bit of touring, and it all just kind of escalated to this point.
CHRISITNA: What do you want to accomplish with this band?
GREG: Really, Ive already surpassed all my goals for time and distance, because I never expected that it would get to this point. That being said, I think Id just like for everyone who would enjoy the music Im making, to be able to be exposed to it on some level.
CHRISTINA: How do you go about writing a song?
GREG: I actually write a couple different ways. If Im home, or around my guitar, then it usually starts with me just messing around, and playing little guitar parts and stuff... then building off that. Other times, Ill be driving or something and I'll come up with a hook. Since Im rather forgetful, I sing those ideas into my cell phone voice mail. But usually I write all the music first, then lyrics
CHRISTINA: [LAUGHS] how cute
CHRISTINA: Lyrically where do they stem from?
GREG: lifeExperiences. Which is a better way to say "girls that broke my heart". I dont, I write about stuff I know. Im 18 years old. I know getting my heart broken, and being depressed because I dont have any money and I hate all my friends
CHRISTINA: How was it recording the new material?
GREG: On one hand, I could say a nightmare, on the other, it was amazing. I recorded with my friend Derek. The problem was that we're both perfectionists. I literally spent twelve hours on the vocals to a song called "addicted" that's gonna be on the full length, when that comes out so it was a very long process. I spent about 5 months in the studio, but Im so proud of how it came out, that it was all worth it.
CHRISTINA: What do you think has been the biggest learning experience for you thus far?
GREG: touring definitely taught me so much. I was out for 3 months straight, and I met so many incredible people, and saw so many thingsBut you just learn how to survive. I was living off $10. But it was incredible.
CHRISTINA: Who influences you to create music?
GREG: bands I love, mostly... The Gin Blossoms, Jawbreaker, Sunny Day Real Estate, No Motiv, Midtown, New Amsterdams, Elliot SmithI could go on forever
CHRISTINA: Since you are a one-man band. What do you do to make your set stand out? To make your live show desirable?
GREG: there's not a whole lot I can really do, realistically. I mean, Im one guy with an acoustic guitar that sits down. So I think a lot of kids somehow just identify with that, and realize that Im not fake, Im not about selling records, that Im just a kid that feels the same way that they all have at some point. I think kids get into that.
CHRISTINA: What is worth more to you the actual experience or the memory that remains when the experience is over?
GREG: I think Im more about memories, but you really have to have both.. Because you can always look back on your memories and go "wow, that sucked" or "wow, that was amazing". But it'll never be the same as it was being right there and in the moment. So yeah Im not sure I can really answer that;
CHRISTINA: tell me something about you that no one else knows.
GREG: why would I do such a thing? If no one else knows, then it's obviously a secret, and it's kind of foolish to give secrets away. =D
CHRISITNA: [LAUGHS] and I keep guessing
CHRISTINA: top five CDs to date?
GREG: oh God
1- DIARY- Sunny Day Real Estate
2- NEW MISERABLE EXPERIENCE- Gin Blossoms
3 THE COLOR AND SHAPE- Foo Fighters
4 SAVE THE WORLD, LOSE THE GUY- Midtown
5 EITHER/OR- Elliot Smith
I can't believe you only let me pick 5
CHRISTINA: [LAUGHS]
GREG: Im sitting here thinking, and there's so many I couldnt fit.
CHRISTINA: I love making it hard
GREG: are you making a pass at me?
CHRISTINA: [LAUGHS HYSTERICALLY] NO
GREG:[LAUGHS] sorry
CHRISTINA you expect to happen on this up coming tour? Your expectations
GREG: I expect Ill play shows, and rock as hard as I can, and hopefully kids will be into it. Thats about all I can really ask for. Being able to afford to eat would be nice, too.
CHRISTINA: If you could give me any advice what would it be?
GREG: Dont let anyone tell you that something you want isn't possible. Ive realized that if you're willing to put your heart into something, and completely bust your ass for it, then anything is possible.
CHRISTINA: What are the pro and cons of touring?
GREG: pros are that you're away from home, seeing new places, playing shows, and meeting people who don't realize that you aren't as cool as they think. Cons go hand in hand with the pros, in that you're away from home, and your family and friends for long periods of time, and it gets to be really hard to stay in touch all the time. Theres not a lot of sleep to be had. And a lot of times drives are long, and uncomfterable. But it's fun
CHRISTINA: What is the greatest part about performing to you?
GREG: when you can look out into a crowd and see everyone watching and listening, and singing along.. And just realizing that they're getting it, and they know what it's all about. that's the best feeling in the world.
CHRISTINA: Do you ever get nervous performing?
GREG: rarely. I played two show with midtown in July, and they're my favorite band, so the first night of that was pretty nerve wracking but Im pretty used to doing it
CHRISTINA: How did those shows go? Crowd response and all
GREG: They were incredible. i played with a lot of bands on tour that i wasn't sure how they'd go.. i played with a static lullaby in Florida, and it was amazing, they're the complete opposite of me, but kids responded really well. But the midtown shows were insane. Some of the most fun i had the whole tour.
CHRISTINA: Well is there anything i missed that you would like to add?
GREG: not really. My website is www.timeanddistance.com , my label's is www.i-surrender.com, and Ill be on tour forever.
CHRISTINA: SHOUT OUTS
GREG: okay. Rob Hitt. Lora Demark. My parents. Derek Reese. The reunion show. Post break tragedy. My hopes dashed. Who likes records. Genco records. Pirate prints. Run.dash.sprint. Kaci & Shelly. Neutral agreement. Mankinds only hope. Break away. Anthem. A static lullaby. Remember Maine. And the screaming green meanies.
