| One of the many favorite pastimes for locals, as well as tourists, in and around the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, is bicycling the 11 mile loop road at Cades Cove. This was not our first time around the cove, but it was the best. You see, the Cove Loop Road is closed to motorists on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until 10:00 a.m.. We set our alarm clock for 4:00 a.m. By 5:oo a.m., we were on our way to Cades cove, at 6:00 a.m. we were making a pitstop at a Shoneys restaurant in Maryville,. We pigged out on Shoney's breakfast bar, and readied ourselves for the 11 mile ride. |  |

| By 7:00 we arrived at the cove and started our trip. Wow! What a difference it made
without motorists. We were able to ride side by side down the middle of the road, with no fear of being rundown. Many other people had the same great idea. There were so many bicycles that I felt like I was in a race. Everybody was very friendly and sympathetic to the riggers of pulling the hills. The hills are small but some are steep. The early morning hours are the best time to see wildlife. I watched a turkey gobbler in full display try to seduce a hen. The deer were jumping over the fences on almost every turn. No place in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park can beat Cades Cove for viewing wildlife. If you add the quietness of traveling by bicycle, this could be the best way to see wildlife in the park. |
