I am an alumni of Valdosta State University and hold a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice. I am a former State Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol and currently a patrol sergeant with the Walton County Sheriff's Office located in the Florida Panhandle. I have been a peace officer for fifteen years.
As a trooper, I worked out of post-31 located in Valdosta, Ga. I patrolled over 1,100 square miles of territory. My duties included but were not limited to: investigating wrecks on any public roadway, enforcing state and local laws, assisting disabled motorists, assisting other agencies when requested, responding to state emergencies such as riots, natural disasters, and dignatary protection when called upon.
I believe a balance of work experience along with an education makes for the most effective law enforcement officer. Learning theory and concepts in the class room helps the officer interpret the many different incidents that occur on the job.. This further helps the officer to understand why the laws are being violated that he or she is charged to enforce. It is important to respect the law and appreciate what it stands for. The law is set-up to protect our society . Without law and order, we would all live in a dark and brutal world where only the savages would survive..
So many times the police get a "Bad Rap" with the public. I assert that my badge stands for "Public Trust." Remember that most law enforcement officers are people just like you. They are the kids you went to school with and your next door neighbors. They have hearts and feelings like everyone else. The person that gets such a bad rap is the same person that straps body armor over his chest, puts a gun on his side, leaves his family at the door and for an impressive $23,000 per year risks his/her life everyday to protect YOU AND ME. What is your life worth?
This site is dedicated to Trooper Mark Coats of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Killed in the line of duty on the side of I-95 on November 20, 1992.
I will not forget you. |
