Like the “Valentines Day” special at one of the restaurants in Glasgow that attracted responses from 500 women but only two male responded. And they too wonder why. The female owner thought it was a great idea. Study tests rules of attraction
British researchers hoping to find the answer will stage a mass speed dating experiment to reveal the most effective strategy for finding a partner. Over an evening of 500 dates, psychologists will tease out the topic of conversation that emerges as the best for showing quickly whether a couple are well suited. "If you've only got a short period to talk to someone to get the measure of them, what should you talk to them about?" he asked. In the experiment singles will have 10 speed dates after being instructed to talk about different topics, such as favourite films, musical tastes, or embarrassing experiences, on each encounter. "My hope is we can work out the quickest, best way of gaining an insight into someone, so you can be more targeted in your dating," Professor Wiseman said. Previous matchmaking studies have failed to pin down even seemingly basic dating rules, such as whether opposites attract. "There's been an enormous number of studies on it and the data is really mixed. We just don't know whether people looking for long-term compatibility are better off with someone like themselves or someone very different. "Some studies out recently have shown that your music collection gives away a great deal about who you are and whether or not you'll get on with someone, and that's a question we'll be looking at." The researchers are still looking for men to take part in the experiment, to be held in Edinburgh on Sunday. They have been inundated with women. http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/study-tests-rules-of-attraction/2006/04/05/1143916594745.html
