What is the biggest health risk to women?
Violence.

More Australian women are at risk of health problems associated with violence than they are at risk of any other.

The UN released a report yesterday damning Australia’s record on combating violence against women.

The State of the World Population report 2005, released by the United Nations Population Fund outlines that the single biggest health risk to Australian women is abuse.

The report also outlined impacts to the economy, supporting an Access Economics report which said violence cost Australia more than $8 billion per year.

Community support is building for White Ribbon Day (25 November) which aims to educate people about the levels of violence against women in our community.

Australian sports heroes including Robbie Farah, Dene Halatua, Benji Marshall, Barry Hall, Jimmy Smith, Mario Fenech and Ron Coote have signed up as Ambassadors of White Ribbon Day.

Parliamentary members of the Government and Opposition, as well as singer Pete Murray and media personalities Peter FitzSimons and also Adam Spencer as well as many other prominent men have signed up to be Ambassadors.

Instead of spending $100 million of tax payer’s money on Liberal Party propaganda to promote extreme industrial relations changes, the Howard Government should be funding a whole of government approach to combating violence against women.

Labor calls on the Howard Government to:

1. properly fund emergency accommodation for women and children escaping violence;

2. ensure schools teach young people that violence is never acceptable in intimate relationships; and

3. initiate a national plan to combat violence against women - an evidence-based plan written in consultation with the states, which allocates responsibilities and includes a timetable for implementation.

Community support, alarming statistics and huge losses to the economy prove just how out of touch the Howard Government is with Australian society.
