Scott Krippayne ~ All of Me
Scott Krippayne just doesnt think hes cool. Never mind that hes a successful solo artist, has penned a string of chart-topping singles, and that Point of Grace, Avalon, Rebecca St. James and Sandi Patty have all recorded his tunes. Never mind that he has spent the past five years packing out auditoriums and sharing the stage with such artists as 4HIM, Kathy Troccoli, Mark Lowry and others. Never mind that his face is in the record stores and his name is on the radio charts and award nominations lists. Nope, even with all of his successes, Scott Krippayne doesnt see himself as cool, and he doesnt seem to mind a bit. To prove it, the easy-going Seattle-native, husband and father of two, composed a song about that very topic for his latest Spring Hill release, All of Me. Aptly titled Im Not Cool, this upbeat tune about self-acceptance reveals just how comfortable Scott Krippayne is with himself these days and sets the tone for an outing that is honest, revelatory and absolutely real.

Ill admit that in high school and even as a Christian artist, there have been times I felt like I didnt fit in, he says. Almost everybody goes through that at some point in their life. But Ive come to realize it would be foolish for me to try to color my hair or dress up in some trendy clothes. That might work for somebody else, but it wouldnt be me. I may not be the cool guy, but thats OK because I know God loves me the way I am.

Drawing on that theme, All of Me is a powerful collection of what Krippayne calls snapshots of his current spiritual and emotional journeys. Building on the success of the Bright Star Blue Sky (including three No. 1 Inspirational radio singles), All of Me brings listeners even more of Krippaynes insightful lyrics and moving melodies, while ever so slightly dialing his pop music sensibilities up a notch.

Deeper Still, co-written with FFHs Jeromy Deibler, is a powerful and exhilarating ride in which listeners are invited to move from complacency into the depths of grace. A driving chorus carries the songs melodic intensity, and the lyrics are straight from the heart.

There are times I have to ask myself if I am simply going through the motions, Krippayne says. I go through times of complacency, where Im not growing spiritually. But there still is that longing in my heart of hearts for this relationship with Christ to deepen. Thats what Deeper Still is about.

The title track, co-written with Steve Siler and Kent Hooper, is a rhythmic, acoustic guitar-driven number that grooves unapologetically with a lyric that advocates surrendering wholly to the will of Christ.

All of Me is saying that God doesnt deserve just a part of me, Krippayne says. God sacrificed His son for us and deserves me giving all of myself, and allowing him to work in all areas of my life, even the ones Im ashamed of.

The contagious ballad What Breaks Your Heart, co-written with Tony Wood, could hold its own on any mainstream pop radio station. Laden with layers of background vocals and an R&B mid-tempo groove, the song speaks of finding the heart of God and what matters to Him that those things might be important to us as well. Krippaynes current musical influences helped shape this song, which is delivered in a slick pop production style.

May I Have This Dance, a ballad he wrote for his 2-and-a-half year old daughter, is perhaps the most moving song on the record. While he didnt want to duplicate the popular coming-of-age tune Butterfly Kisses, he wanted a song that would reflect the love he has for his daughter and the joy of dancing with her years from now on her wedding day.

She loves music, and when we have music on she runs to me and wants to dance, he says. When I wrote May I Have This Dance it was about putting down on paper one of those moments I didnt want to forget. My focus was writing about our relationship and the things I treasure about her and all the beautiful memories we share.

Krippayne always writes more songs than he can use, and as a result, many of these songs wind up on other artists records. Having only ten songs on All of Me to communicate to his audience where he is in life right now, he hopes his latest release will give listeners an authentic look at his struggles and victories, and that they will be encouraged as a result. More than anything, he hopes his honesty and openness about his spiritual journey will resonate in the hearts of his fans and will inspire them to a more authentic relationship with Christ.

I struggle with living in the shallow water, he says. Sometimes when we struggle, we are forced to look inside ourselves and ask the tough questions. We have to deal with some issues that we might not have the answers to right now. But that is all part of the journey and God accepts us where we are. Honesty is what this record is about, and I strive to write honestly about my life. If I can do that, then hopefully that will find its way into somebody elses heart and will make a difference.
