SOUTHERN OREGON TRIP

We took a trip to southern Oregon April 29-May 6.  We flew into Portland and then took a day + 1/2 to drive down the Pacific Coast Highway to just outside Brookings, Oregon.  Brookings is about 4-5 miles north of the California border on the coast.  Our first stop on the way to Brookings was Bandon, Oregon.

Charlie and I rented a house just outside of Brookings that was on the beach.  The house was really great---relaxing, quiet, and perfect for the week.  If anyone is interested in more information on the house, just let us know.  We highly recommend it to others!

Our activities centered around hiking, fishing, and relaxing.  We took a hike through the Redwoods National Forest in California and a trail called "Damnation Creek".  The Redwoods are so spectacular and magestic.  It's almost as if they came straight from a Tolkein novel.

We did another hike in Loeb State Park in Oregon just east of Brookings.  The trail we littered with serpentinite, but the real winner for this trail was we saw a wild black bear at the trail turn around in a meadow.  Neither of us had ever seen a bear in the wild, so this was a neat experience.

We also went on a sea fishing trip during which Charlie and I both caught 10 snapper each.  We had them vacuum packed and frozen at a local seafood company so we could take them back to Houston with us.  We did keep one fish out for our dinner that night, though, and it was delicious!  Fresh fish is the way to go!  The only bad thing about the fishing trip was I got really sea sick.  Fortunately everyone on the boat caught their limit quickly, so we had a quick fishing trip.  I'm not sure my stomach could have taken 6 hours of that!

We also just relaxed on the beach, which was literally a half-minute's walk out of our house and down to the water.  It was quite chilly in Oregon in comparison to Texas at the time, which was a relief.  We left 50-60F weather to come back to Houston at 90F temperatures and 90% humidity.  Yuck.
