| 'I love you' | |||||||||||||||||
| Michelle stretched up on tiptoes to kiss his nose, her forehead grazing the stubble on his chin. She rubbed her face and muttered 'scratchy' | |||||||||||||||||
| He reached for her, but laughing, she danced away from him, her hair swinging out from her head in a golden halo. | |||||||||||||||||
| Mike pulled a face , rolling his eyes upwards and turning his lips 'inside out'. It was his own peculiar talent, his only claim to fame. | |||||||||||||||||
| Michelle giggled at his antics, just as he'd known she would. She skipped from the room, pausing to poke her head round the doorframe , her sole purpose to stick her tongue out at him in mock defiance. | |||||||||||||||||
| He growled at her in pretend anger, enjoying the fading sound of her laughter as she moved towards the kitchen muttering 'I'm starving' | |||||||||||||||||
| Mike sat back in the armchair and closed his eyes, listening to the sounds floating from the kitchen on the warm summer breeze. He heard running water and the sounds of chopping; the crinkling protests of the cellophane wrapper as she battled to prise free the contents and her whispered curses as she struggled. | |||||||||||||||||
| Ten minutes later she emerged form the kitchen and handed him a tall glass of lemonade. She definitely wanted something... Money perhaps? It was usually money, for whatever latest fad her school friends had conned their parents into buying. He wondered what it was this time? He felt sure he was about to find out.. 'Lovely... thanks' he said as he lifted the glass to his lips. It was wet with cold and the ice rattled against the edge of the glass and then against his teeth as he sipped. | |||||||||||||||||
| Michelle disappeared into the kitchen, returning seconds later with her half-eaten sandwich in one hand, no plate, and her glass of cola in the other. She flopped onto the sofa beside him and laughed as the leather seat made a 'farting sound as she landed. | |||||||||||||||||
| 'Pardon?' he teased and got a dig in the ribs with her bony elbow by way of reply. | |||||||||||||||||
| They sat side by side, the silence lodged uncomfortably between them. He could feel her plucking up the courage to ask for whatever it was she wanted. | |||||||||||||||||
| 'Daddy' she was staring intently at her plate. It must be serious, she wouldn't or couldn't look at him. Act cool he told himself as he said 'Hmmm?' | |||||||||||||||||
| 'Dad- deee' he voice rose at the end of the word forming a question. He wished she'd get on with it. | |||||||||||||||||
| 'Yes. I'm daddy. What do you want from daddy?' he teased. | |||||||||||||||||
| She began hesitantly to explain that her friends Sammy and Kayleigh were going and that 'Laura's Mum said Laura can go if I can go and so please daddy please can I? | |||||||||||||||||
| She looked at him in earnest as he tried to compute what she had just said. His thirteen year old daughter had just asked if she could go to Spain on holiday for a week with her friends. He asked a few pertinent questions, the why, when , where type of thing, knowing that his answer was going to break her heart. And it did. As he uttered the words he saw her staring at him in horror, her bottom lip quivering as she tried to retain her childish composure. He tried to explain, but as the tears burst forth like water from a dam, she glared at him accusingly and as she prepared to rush from the room she yelled 'You never want me to have any fun. I hate you' |
