TAKE UP THE CROSS AND LOSE YOUR LIFE
In the post "Meat of the Word" we discussed that it was important to study and learn the "meat" of the word so that we could learn what God's will is for us, and to "take up the cross" and follow him.  Let's explore "taking up the cross" as well as "losing our life for Christ" and what this means.

Let's begin by reading:

LUKE 14:26-27 & 33

26  If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27  and whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

33  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Before we continue, I would like to give the Greek definition of the word "hate" as it is used here, as I have known people to get confused by this particular choice of wording.  The Greek word that was translated into "hate" was "miseo, (
mis-eh'-o)" meaning to "love less"; having a preference for one thing over another.  Now we will continue reading.

MATTHEW 10:37-39

37  He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

38  And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

39  He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Here we see that we have to love God and Jesus more than we love anything or anybody else, including ourselves.  They have to be "number one" in our lives.

MATTHEW 16:24-26

24  Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

25  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

26  for what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

MARK 8:34-37

34  And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

35  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

36  For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

LUKE 9:23-25

23  and he said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25  For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole would, and lose himself, or be cast away?
