Thor is one of Odin's sons. He is a member of the Aesir and the chief enemy of the giants. His principle weapon, and symbol is his axe-hammer, Mjolnir, with which he would smash the heads of giants. In order to use Mjolnir, he had to wear iron gloves and a belt of strength. If he threw Mjolnir, it would return to his hand. The hammer is symbolic of lightning. Thor was married to Sif.
Thor was the most widely worshipped of the gods, and was asked to ensure fertility. People wore hammer shaped amulets even after the Christianization of Scandinavia. Our weekday Thursday is named for Thor.
