April Fools

Spoilers: None, completely AU
Pairing: B/A or Aus
Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters
Distribution: Other than my site? Just ask and let me know where it goes
Summary: Someone plays an Aprils fools joke on our favorite couple.
Except they're not a couple and in fact quite despise each other.
Feedback: I love it, adore it, cherish it, and truthfully can't live
without it.
AN: Angel's personality is really Angelus' but I'm going to call him
Angel for most of the fic. I seriously doubt in college that he would go by his
full long first name. So his name is Angelus but everyone calls him Angel.
AN2: I plan to continue my other stories, but I have the flightiest muse
and until more inspiration comes for those stories, I'll go with what I've got.
AN3: Anyone ever noticed how much Scott looks like Parker? I swear that
they have to be related in the show.
The party was in full swing by the time Buffy arrived. She was excited
and nervous as this was the first party that she had gone thrown by a senior. In
the past she's gone to a few frat parties but almost anyone could get into
those. This party was thrown by Parker Abrams, one of the most popular guys on
campus. In high school Buffy had dated his cousin Scott for a while but that
fizzled out rather quickly. In fact all of her relationships so far had made
permanent trips to the graveyard shortly after their start.
Buffy didn't actually like Parker very much, he was friends with the
devil after all, but she knew better than to turn down an invitation to his
April Fools day party. Not counting Scott she was probably the only Freshman who
would be attending. Cordelia wanted to maim her. Spotting Lucifer, Buffy cringed
as her night became less fun. Since the day they had met, Buffy Summers and
Angelus (whatever his last name was) had hated each other.
At the end of the first week of classes Angel had approached her after
Ancient Egyptian Culture which they had together. He had tried to pick her up
with a wink and some crude remarks. Buffy had bristled at his arrogance and told
him off. Since then they had not been able to speak two kind words to each
other.
He was still arrogant and had the reputation of being a player, but
that's not what Buffy hated most. She hated how damn sexy he was. She couldn't
stand to be around him and he pissed her off regularly but instead of wanting to
hit him for the things that he said, Buffy wanted to jump him. She had been
dreaming of him for months and it had not stopped even when she hadn't seen him
for weeks around the holidays. Buffy had never had any real feelings of desire
for the guys that she had dated in the past and so hated Angel even more because
he could.
Trying to ignore him Buffy looked around for someone that she knew.
Seeing a girl from her psych class she decided that now was the time to get to
know ‘that nice girl who always forgot a pen‘. Unfortunately she had to walk
past Angel to get to her.
He of course could not let her pass without some sort of insult, "I
didn't know that they let Girls Scouts sell cookies after dark."
Buffy froze and opened her mouth to reply in kind but stopped. She was
determined to have a nice argue free evening. That meant ignoring Angel. Sending
him a pitying glance she walked away without saying a word leaving him to glare
at her back.
'Bitch!' Angel watched her walk away and a large part of him wanted to
haul her back, bend her over his arm, and kiss her senseless. Ever since the
first day he'd seen her he'd wanted her. The blinding hate that consumed him at
her snide refusal had not dimmed his lust any. It seemed that she lived to taunt
him. With her mouth and her body. She always wore these little sundresses, or a
halter top and tight jeans, and she always had some sort of retort for his
numerous insults. Their encounters never failed to leave him pissed off and
horny as hell.
Angel had the reputation of being a player and he did his best to live
up to it. He rarely had less than four one night stands a week, and a couple of
lovers on the side who had managed to keep his interest. But never had he been
rejected unless the woman was a lesbian. So far Buffy had proved to be straight
and immune to his powers of seduction.
His friend Parker came up with a drink for him that was very welcome.
Quickly he knocked it back and looked around the room for candidates to share
his bed that night. There were some tolerable looking women there that evening.
Maybe he'd fuck the girl that Buffy was talking to so animatedly just to piss
her off. 'Now there’s an idea.' Flashing a smirk at his friend he moved to the
other side of the room until he could make eye contact with the ash brunette.
Parker watched his friend with amused interest. He had seen the
interaction between Buffy and Angel tonight and for the past few months. Tonight
he had the mother of all April Fools joke planned for the two of them. Angel had
just helped him to start things rolling, and now all he needed was Buffy to get
into place.
Ten minutes later the girl that had been talking to Buffy made her
excuses and started walking over to an Angel who wasn't looking very sober.
Seeing Buffy look around and clench her fists repeatedly spurred him to go
forward and offer her a drink, "You look like you could use this."
Murmuring a distracted, "Thanks," Buffy began to drink the
contents of the glass in quick sips. 'That rat bastard had to hit on the person
that I was having a nice conversation with.' With a smile Buffy turned from the
dance floor to talk to Parker. She was just starting to get her good mood back
when a crash sounded behind her.
Angel was having a hard time staying upright. He had only had one beer
before the drink Parker gave him, so based on experience he still should be
pretty sober, but the room kept spinning. The table lamp to his right was no
somewhere on the floor, slowly he shook his head to clear it. He saw a very
blurry Buffy and started to move toward her with the intent to satisfy his lust
for her once and for all. But when he took a step his legs threatened to buckle.
A couple of his friends came over to help him. They took him to an upstairs
bedroom to lie down for a while.
Buffy was laughing her head off. The sight of the normally calm and
confidant Angel bumbling around drunk like an idiot mad her night. Happily she
resumed her conversation with Parker and graciously accepted his offer to dance
a few minutes later. Towards the end of their dance Buffy began to feel light
headed. When Parker turned them fast to avoid a couple Buffy had to rest her
head against his shoulder to stop the spinning.
"Buffy you look a little ill. Would you like to lie down for a
while?" Buffy gratefully accepted and was led away up the stairs. Stopping
in front of a door Parker turned Buffy to face it and put her hand on the knob,
"Just go in there and lie down until you feel better."
Nodding Buffy pushed open the door and walked forward until her knees hit the end of the bed. She crawled forward to reach the pillows when she came into contact with another body. The muscles under her hands were large and hard, identifying her bedmate as male. Rubbing her hands up and down the back she vaguely saw a tattoo that looked like some sort of freaky bird. It was savage and beautiful.
'Yay for door number one.' The body moved and then hands came up
to touch her stomach then her breasts. Sighing she leaned in to the caressing
hands.
Angel woke from his light doze and for a moment thought he was still
dreaming. Feeling the hands on him he turned and tried to feel who it was. It
felt like a willing woman, so he sat up to kiss her mouth but caught her cheek
instead. Rooting around their mouths finally found each other and began mauling
the other. Angel stroked his tongue rhythmically in her mouth showing her
clearly what he intended to do with her body before leaning back and pulling at
the dress that she had on. Nails scrapped down his chest stopping at his belt
buckle. Her hands pulled on it but couldn't get it unbuckled.
Slapping her hands away Angel undid it himself and quickly yanked off
his pants and boxers. Returning to the woman he pushed her down on her back as
he trailed light sucking kisses down to her breasts. Impatiently he pulled and
tugged until the bra was gone and he could suck on her breasts. Moving his
kisses down he pulled off her panties and stopped for a minute to admire the
elaborate B tattoo with a tiny puppy sitting next to it located a little higher
and to the left of her mound. Grinning he nipped and licked at it until he felt
her hands pull on his shoulders to bring him up.
Buffy was impatient. She didn't want a nice and slow loving she wanted
to be fucked. If she had been sober she would have been shocked at that thought,
as it was she only wanted to feel this boy's wonderful body against hers. He
moved up and nudged her knees apart so that he could lie between them. Buffy
moved restlessly beneath him and gasped as she felt him filing her. It felt sooo
good. But there was a little pain. 'Pain?' Her mind tried to wrap around why
that was important but his next thrust wiped out all thought.
Together they moved frantically. Up toward that pinnacle of bliss they
knew was there. When it hit their cries filled the room, making their host
downstairs smirk knowingly.
~~~~~
Buffy woke up groggy and feeling slightly cramped. She thought that
midweek parties were definitely a bad idea because now she had to get up and go
to class. She just hoped that Willow wasn't too chirpy this morning. Opening her
eyes the sight that greeted her wasn't her alarm clock but a large muscular
chest. Buffy sucked in a breath as fragmented memories of the night before
filtered through her mind. Holding her breath she moved her gaze upward until
she was looking into the face of a sleeping Angel.
Jumping out of bed she stood next to it panting heavily before
scrambling around for her clothes. Dressing quickly she tried to not think about
the fact that she'd fucked her worst enemy last night. And had liked it too. And
really wanted to do it again. 'No, no, no, no, no...'
Grabbing her shoes she dashed out the door without looking back.
~~~~~
A few hours later Angel wandered down to the kitchen looking for coffee.
His head was killing him his mouth felt like it was full of cotton. He spotted
Parker reading the paper but decided to ignore his friend until his head stopped
pounding and he could yell at him properly.
Parker however had different plans, "So did you enjoy your evening
last night?"
Glaring at him Angel replied, "Drugging me never makes me happy,
but whoever you sent up last night was a lot of fun." He took a sip and
glared suspiciously at Parker who was laughing hysterically.
"You still don't know?"
"Know what?" Parker was really starting to irritate the hell
out of him.
"Who it is that you fucked."
Sighing Angel moved to sit at the table and replied, "Nice body,
cute tattoo, could have had blond hair. Who she was doesn't matter."
Parker looked at him with a grin, "It might when you find out that
it was Buffy Summers your nemesis."
The coffee cup was dropped from his hand and splashed all over the table
as Angel stared at him in shock.
Parker watched him for a few minutes before saying, "April
Fools."
~~~~~
For the first time in his life Angel was afraid to see a girl that he
had slept with face to face. Buffy was unlike anyone that he had met and so he
had no way to gauge her reactions. A part of him expected her to stand up in the
middle of class and scream, Rapist! He didn't know how she had reacted to
Parker's joke. Would she believe that he had no part in it and had been drugged
also? Or would she try to have him arrested.
The second possibility seemed more likely when he made eye contact with
her. Her hate for him seemed amplified until it was almost a living, breathing
thing that was wrapped around her like an expensive fur. Scowling and insolently
looking her up and down Angel walked past her to slouch in his chair and stare
at the front of the classroom as his mind replayed last night over and over in
his head.
~~~~~~
Buffy stormed out of class as soon as the teacher finished her lecture. She
stomped down the hallway trying to think of anything that would make her forget
last night. After a shower and some extra strength Tylenol her head had cleared
a little from it's foggy state. She had skipped all of her classes except this
one because she hadn't wanted Angel to think that he had affected her in any
way.
Somehow she didn't think that she had done a good job of hiding her
feelings between the death glares and the nervous fidgeting. She had been
completely unable to control her reactions to him and that was just
unacceptable. She only had two weeks left of class and then finals, after which
Angel graduated so she wouldn't have to see him ever again.
She'd never have to hear his taunts and insults again. Never have to
hear that evil little chuckle after he had just made fun of someone. Never see
his tight winter sweaters. Never feel his skin against hers, never hear that
tiny little groan that he let out just before....
"Stop it. Just stop thinking about it and it will go away."
A hand snaked out to grab her arm after her exclamation and drag her
into a side room. Whirling to see who had grabbed her Buffy came face to face
with Angel. The very damn man that she was trying to avoid!
"What the hell are you doing?" She spat angrily at him.
He tried to stay calm and said, "I want to talk about last
night."
Turning away abruptly to hide the blush that sprung into her cheeks she
tersely replied, "There's nothing to talk about."
"Look I just want it made clear that I didn't take advantage of you
last night. I was drugged also and as much as possible we were both consenting.
Parker's the one who arranged the whole thing. Ok? I just want that to be
clear."
Whirling Buffy looked at him angrily, "It's crystal. But are you
really sure that you were drugged last night? I know that you didn't drug me or
plan on me coming to that room, but you surely just made the best of the
situation since it's also clear that you've wanted to get into my pants for a
very long time."
Invading her personal space he shot back, "The same could be said
for you. Your moans and whimpers sounded like they were coming from a sexually
depraved person. Been a while since you've had any? I had to be drugged to look
over the bitchiness and starving war victim figure."
Getting even closer to him Buffy whispered, "You bastard." She
was shaking with rage and couldn't think of anything else to say.
Sensing that Angel smirked at her, "What Buff, you all out of come
backs ?"
"No, I've got this." Grabbing his head she pulled his face to
hers. Buffy nipped roughly on his bottom lip before soothing it with her tongue.
When he opened his mouth she dove in and attempted to conquer. But he wasn't
going to give in that easily. While Angel's tongue did battle with Buffy's his
hands slid down her body to grab her hips and bring them into contact with his
aching hard on. This jarred her back to reality and she pulled away from him and
rapidly backed up.
Angel followed her, "No you don't, you can't start something like
that and then just run away."
Buffy backed up until she hit the wall and Angel pressed his body into
hers, "I-I jus-st didn't want a repeat of last night. I only kissed you to
shut you up."
Just before he kissed her he whispered against her lips, "Does that
strategy also work on you?" Kissing her with all the passion that he felt
Angel felt triumphant when she shuddered and kissed him back. Once again he
moved his hands down her body but this time he dipped his fingers into her jeans
to caress her tattoo, "Are you sure that you don't want a repeat?"
Glaring at him Buffy just grabbed his head to kiss him again.
Angel kissed her back while working on the buttons on her jeans. When he
had them undone he tugged them down her hips a little ways and reveled in her
moan as one of his fingers trailed along the edges of her panties. He felt like
he was on fire and they had barely touched. Needing some more contact with her
he rubbed his erection against her thigh as his finger curled underneath the
band to finally touch her. She was hot and wet to the touch and he desperately
wished that they were any other place than an office in the middle of the
afternoon so that he could fuck her.
Sliding his finger deep inside of her he was amazed at how tight she
was. A thought came to him and he moved his head to her ear and whispered,
"Were you a virgin last night Buffy?" Instead of answering her mouth
moved to his neck and began kissing and sucking. Deciding he really didn't care
Angel moved his finger faster in her before adding a second one. She was
starting to make those lovely little whimpers as she had last night. He pressed
harder into her hip to get more friction and hopefully ease his suffering in the
slightest. When his thumb found her clit she shuddered, this time in ecstasy,
and bit into his shoulder to muffle her scream as her orgasm hit.
Angel was looking around for any possible place to lay her when someone
behind them cleared their throat. They both froze. With his back still blocking
the other persons view he removed his fingers and quickly pulled up her jeans
and fastened them.
Turning he faced Professor Rory Parkinson of geology with remarkable
aplomb, "Excuse us sir, we will be vacating your office presently."
"Uhm yes, please do that."
They professor was having a very hard time looking at them. He had
certainly never been in this sort of situation before. Buffy was grateful for
this as she rushed out and began running as fast as she could to try and reach
safety.
Angel, however, followed her again, " Wait a second. You got yours
I didn't."
With tears in her throat Buffy chocked out, "Let me go."
Surprisingly he did. He just didn't have it in him to torment her any
more. Buffy ran for her room as fast as she could. When she got there she buried
her face in the pillow and cried for a few minutes. Her anger though quickly
reasserted itself. 'How dare he? Of all the arrogant things to do and say...
Well I'll just forget this ever happened. I'll forget about the party and
everything since then. I'll just forget it.'
Buffy dried her eyes and got an apple extremely pleased with her plan.
The door burst open and Cordelia walked in, "Ok Buffy, spill. I want to
know everything that happened at Parker Abrams party, and I'm not leaving until
I hear every single detail." A groan was all the response she got.
~~~~~
For the rest of the school term Buffy and Angel avoided each other like a
plague. They tried to never look in the others direction during class and
avoided social occasions where they thought the other would be attending. When
finals were over and done with they both heaved a sigh of relief.
For Angel the end of the year meant the end of school in general. He was
graduating with a business degree and in the middle of the summer he was going
to join his late father's business partner in LA. A new big city and a great job
beckoned him and he was excited to move away from Buffy. More often than not he
woke up panting and painfully aroused from erotic dreams staring the little
blonde. None of his other lovers could banish her from his thoughts.
The same was true for Buffy. While she didn't find new lovers to try and
forget him, she still tried to banish him from her thoughts. She hung out with
her friends almost all of the time. And when she woke up from her erotic dreams
she studied to push the images out of her head. For the first time ever she
sailed through her finals with little worry about not knowing the answers. Over
the summer she was going to work and hang out before school started again in the
fall. She knew that Angel was moving away and she couldn't wish him away fast
enough.
Buffy started working part time for the gift shop in the museum a week
after the end of school. A week after that she was still not over the flu bug
that she'd picked up during finals. Every morning she woke up sick and had
problems eating with her co-workers in the lunch room. The smells just mad her
nauseous. By evening though she felt good as knew and had a huge appetite.
It was one such evening that she went to rest for a while after work and
before dinner when an idea hit her. With shaking hands she reached for her diary
and flipped through it. Sure enough, she hadn't had a period since before she
and Angel had slept together. Buffy sat there stunned for a moment. 'I can't be
pregnant. I just can't.' Jumping up she grabbed a coat and raced downstairs
yelling to her mom that she'd be back later.
Buffy walked to the closest pharmacist in something of a shocked daze.
Her mind flatly refused to think about the fact that she could be carrying the
Prince of Darkness' child. 'It's not possible.' Mechanically she walked down the
aisle with the tests and chose two different brands. The pitying look of the
cashier as she paid was totally lost on her.
She walked to the museum and entered one of the stalls. Opening her
packages she mechanically read and followed the directions. When the five
minutes was up Buffy looked toward the two sticks and wondered if it really was
important if she looked. 'Maybe if I just leave them here and not look at them
than the problem will go away and I won't be pregnant.' Even with those
reasoning’s Buffy found herself drawn to the two little sticks that were
looking more and more like horns from Angel's head. Taking a deep breath she
closed her eyes and then opened them quickly to look.
Positive.
They were both positive. Two different kinds of tests and they both came
out positive. She was carrying Angel's child. For the rest of her life she was
bound to the person that she hated most through a small child. There could be no
escape from the feelings that he provoked in her. No forgetfulness of the
intense passion that she had felt. No peace. Buffy slumped to the floor and
cried.
~~~~
A furious knocking came at Willows door and after looking at Xander with
confusion she moved to open it. Buffy burst through the room and paced toward
the window before turning back and staring at Willow with wild eyes.
Tentatively Xander asked, "Buff? Are you ok?"
She gestured wildly as she answered, "I am a long ways away from
ok. Ok is like in Kansas, and me and Toto hardly remember what Auntie Em looks
like anymore. But that's not why I'm here. I need Will to track down
Satan."
Willow and Xander glanced nervously at each other as they tried to
understand what she was saying. Buffy kept pacing back and forth in front of
them and muttering. Half of Willows brain considered looking for some sort of
sedative for her before dragging her off to the hospital.
Xander spoke up jokingly, "Normally he lives in the center of hell,
but I've heard that around this time he likes to vacation down in Florida."
That stopped her pacing, "Xander what are you talking about?"
"You said that you wanted to find Satan. So I was telling you where
I thought he was."
Buffy waved her hand at him and resumed pacing, "I wasn't talking
about the fake guy with horns, I'm talking about Angelus resident devil of
Sunnydale. I need to find his house. He was in my class, Ancient Egyptian
Cultures and his last name is..." Stopping she looked at Willow blankly,
"I don't even know his last name. He... I... and I don't even know his last
name!" She started laughing harshly. Buffy moved to a chair and sat down as
her laughter turned to tears.
Willow hugged Buffy tightly to herself, "It's ok, just give me a
few minutes and I'll have his last name for you. I'll find his house and
information about his family. I'll even pull up dental records for you if you'd
like. Sh it's ok."
Buffy allowed herself to be comforted by Willow for a few minutes. When
she had a handle on her emotions she took a deep breath and pulled back,
"Thanks Will."
She looked at her two caring friends and felt tears well up in her eyes
again. They had always been there for her and she appreciated that so much right
now. They would help her.
~~~~~
Angel didn't think anything of the knock that sounded at his door. Friends of
his stopped by all the time, nothing new. Nothing could have prepared him though
for the tiny fist that shot out to catch him in the eye. Stumbling back he
attempted to ward off the next blows. He was only partially successful. When
Angel finally caught the hands of his assailant he looked down into the furious
face of Buffy and mentally groaned.
Swinging her around to sit in a chair Angel pinned her with a furious
glare, "Do you want to tell me why the hell you've stormed into my
house and attacked me unprovoked?"
Nearly spitting with rage she answered him, "Unprovoked? Try a new
one. I have every right to come in here and tear you apart with my bare hands.
Which is what I intend to do. You planned this somehow didn't you? You thought
it would be funny, and then you could just go on without facing the
consequences. Well your wrong, I'm going to kill you!" Buffy flung herself
off of the chair and tried to hit him again but this time he was prepared.
A glass of water on the table next to him served well as a wake up call
for Buffy. Angel watched as she blinked first once then twice somewhat
dispelling the murderous rage in her gaze and replacing it with a measure of
sanity. Again he sat her back down. Stepping back he tried to think of how to
proceed next. She came here for a reason and he didn't think that any of his
normal taunts would be appropriate right now. Angel really didn't want her to
turn into a virago again, she scared him a little when she was like that. 'No.
I'm not scared. I just don't want the neighbors to call the police.'
"Why are you here Buffy?" There, that seemed safe enough.
"Oh I'm sorry to inconvenience you. I know that your so busy and
spending any time with me must be a big concession for you. You conceited,
arrogant, stupid asshole."
Exhaling Angel decided that silence was safest. And maybe retreating to
a bomb shelter.
"I just stopped by to yell at you and kick your ass for
impregnating me with your hell spawn. I don't know exactly how you planned it
but I know that you did. It's all your fault and I hate you."
Slowly Angel stepped back from her as his eyes got wider and his
breathing became shallow. His eyes moved down her body to rest on her stomach.
He tried to wrap his mind around the fact that he was going to have a child.
Vaguely he heard Buffy ranting and raving but nothing penetrated the haze that
had formed around his brain. Angel felt the wall behind him and for a moment
just rested his head back up against it. This was real and solid and comforting,
even though it was only a wall. 'Pregnant. She's pregnant. With MY child.'
Long minutes later he snapped his eyes open, "Get rid of it."
Stopping in her emotional tirade Buffy looked at him in shock,
"Excuse me."
Gesturing he replied, "You heard me. Get rid of it. Have an
abortion, arrange an accident for a miscarriage. I don't care. Just get rid of
it. It's you fault, why weren't you on birth control?"
Standing up Buffy yelled at him, "BECAUSE I WAS A VIRGIN!"
Tears began to leak out of her eyes as she continued, "I wanted to get
married and then have sex so that it would be special and full of love. Since
I'm not in love I figured I wouldn't need it anytime soon."
Her tears began to affect Angel. He had been in the presence of crying
women many times for many different reasons but never before had he wanted to
pull a woman into his arms and kiss her pain away. He started to walk toward her
when she got her second wind.
"I WILL NEVER ABORT MY CHILD! This child was not planned and has
definitely screwed up my plans for life, but I will NEVER do anything to harm
it." Stopping up to Angel she kicked him as hard as she could in the balls.
"So you can just go home to hell." Walking out she slammed the door on
a moaning and gasping Angel.
~~~~~
Hours later Angel was seated at his kitchen table with matching ice packs on his
eye and groin. The throbbing pain that had been his constant companion had
helped to ensure that he hadn't gone into complete shock. 'Buffy is going to
have my child. I'm going to have a son or daughter.' Those were about the only
thoughts to go through his brain for the past few hours. The order to Buffy to
abort the child had been an instinctual response borne out of a desire to
escape. He didn't think that it was right the more he though about it.
Sadly he began to reflect on his sham of a childhood. His parents had
never been loving people. They hadn't love him and they certainly hadn't love
each other. They had enjoyed their comfortable lives and had given little
thought to the feelings of those around him. They had expected the world from
him. Just so that they could brag about him. They ignored him completely
otherwise. It had been something of a relief when they had died.
When Angel was ten years old he had broken his arm falling from a tree.
Rushing into his Father's office he had tearfully told him what happened. His
Father hadn't even looked up from his work and just told him to run along. When
he got to his mother she just said, "Oh Dear, why don't you put some ice on
it." He had stolen money from her purse and took a bus to the hospital.
After that he had vowed that should he have children he would be a better
parent. Well now he was going to have a child. He wouldn't abandon his child to
the world as his parents had.
Knowing what he had to do Angel mentally braced himself. But he put his
visit to Buffy off until tomorrow. Maybe then he could walk without limping.
~~~~~
Saturday was the best sort of day Buffy decided. That morning she had woken up
refreshed after a long nights sleep. She had been able to eat a little breakfast
without getting sick and was currently watching two little boys play across the
street. Her mother was going to be at the gallery until five, which left her
with many relaxing hours to try and plan her future. It seemed as though nothing
could disturb her right now.
The sight of Angel walking up to her house dispelled that thought. He
was the last person that she wanted to see. Unfortunately he had already spotted
her. Scowling and bracing herself for an argument Buffy answered the door. A
subdued and polite Angel met her on the other side.
"May I come in?" Buffy was suspicious of his new nice attitude
but stepped aside to let him in.
He started to compliment the room but Buffy interrupted him, "Cut
the crap. Why are you here?"
Sighing Angel sat down, "Your pregnant with my child. I think that
it would be best if we tried to keep the hostility towards each other to a
minimum. From now on we are going to be in each others company a lot and arguing
all of the time can't be productive." Buffy would have spoken up but he
forestalled her by holding up his hand, "I know that I told you to have an
abortion yesterday, but I wasn't thinking clearly. I've thought all night long
and I want this baby."
Staring hard at him Buffy tried to find any sign that he was lying but
he seemed genuine. After their conversation she had felt relieved thinking that
he wouldn't want anything to do with the baby and then she'd never have to see
him again. Now he wanted to be a Father.
"How do I know that your not going to flake and then leave after a
few years?"
Calmly he replied, "You don't. How do I know that you'll be a good
and stable mother? I'm going to have to trust you, and your going to have to
trust me. I'm not going anywhere. I want to be around to watch my child grow
up."
Sighing Buffy looked down at her shirt and began to play with the hem,
"Well if your planning on being around a lot I guess that it would be best
to call a truce."
"Thank you. Do you also think that you could stop with the Lucifer
comments?"
Seeing his amused expression she replied, "I guess so. But I still
don't like you... Satan." Together they shared a smile. 'This is nice. When
he wants to be Angel can be kind of nice and charming.' Her eyes widened as
Angel got up from his seat and knelt down in front of her.
He pulled a box from his pocket, "Since we are having a child
together, well, would you marry me?"
Explosively Buffy replied, "NO!"
Slumping Angel replied, "Thank God."
She narrowed her eyes at him. He was acting like she had just given him
a pardon for a death sentence. Buffy felt outraged and a little offended. 'I'd
make a wonderful wife thank you very much. You should be sad and disappointed.'
Outwardly she tried for nonchalance, "Didn't really mean it did you."
Chuckling slightly he replied, "No I meant it. But that doesn't
mean I wanted to. I am so glad that you feel the same way I do. It would have
been a horrible torture."
Buffy's hormones had recently become erratic and at his comments she
became amazingly angry toward Angel considering that she, for the most part
agreed with him. Standing up she pulled on his arm dragging him toward the front
door. "That's it! Get out and never come back. I hate you! I NEVER WANT TO
SEE YOU EVER AGAIN. YOU WILL NEVER SEE OUR CHILD!"
She tried to slam the door in his face but he stopped it with his hand,
"I'm not sure what your so upset about but lets get a few things clear. I
plan on having an active role in my child’s life. Therefore I want to live
with them, so you can either live with the both of us or I will go to court and
take it permanently."
Putting a hand to her heart Buffy asked in a shocked voice, "You
would do that?"
"If you tried to keep me away from my child yes, I would do
that." Again reaching into his pockets Angel pulled out a business card and
handed it to her. "Here is my phone number. Call me when you want to talk
about how we're going to combine our lives. Or you can call me to tell me you've
found a lawyer. Whichever you decide." Angel began to walk away trying his
hardest not to look back. He was afraid of looking into the hurt expression on
her eyes and giving in to whatever she wanted. He had to steel himself to her
emotions. Otherwise she’d play him like a puppet.
Waking up from her nap Buffy smelled fried chicken that signaled that her Mother
was home. After Angel had left she'd stood in the open doorway for so long that
a neighbor had come over and asked her if she was alright. After assuring him
that she was ok Buffy had decided to take a nap but sleep had not come easily.
Angel was bound and determined to be a parent to their baby and that, to him,
included living together. So she could either move in with him and try to raise
their child together, or they could go to court over it.
Jumping up from her bed Buffy decided that the next thing to do was tell
her Mom. It was going to be unpleasant and she was in for a huge lecture but a
part of Buffy was hoping that her mother would say, 'I forbid you to live with
Angel.' Then she'd tell Angel that and he'd go away forever. Because who can
stand in the way of a mother's fury?
Stopping outside of the kitchen she took a deep breath before plunging
in, "Mom I have something to tell you."
Joyce turned from the stove at the sound of her voice and gave her a
smile, "Hello Buffy, I have something to tell you too. This guy came into
the gallery inquiring about a painting that he'd seen at an art show a few weeks
back. Then we got to talking, and Buffy I think that he's perfect for you."
She turned back to stir the potatoes, "He's handsome and sweet. I
personally think that you should marry him. This week preferably. I need you to
get married so that I can have grandchildren." She laughed as if she had
said something witty. "Ok maybe not marry him this week, but at least meet
him. His name is..." A large thump cut her off and she turned back to her
daughter with a quizzical look, "Buffy? Buffy?"
They moved together in perfect harmony content to leisurely explore the
others body. All too soon the familiar urgency welled up and their thrusts
became frenzied. His breathing sounded heavily in her ear and she could feel his
heart pounding in his chest. Twining her hands in his hair she arched her back
and whispered, "Angel."
Buffy sat up abruptly in bed and began screaming. She screamed for as
long and as loud as she could. When she stopped she found her mother hovering
next to her, "Buffy? Are you all right sweetie?"
Buffy shook her head.
It had been a week since she had fainted. After she had come to on the
floor she had hurriedly told her Mom that all she needed was sleep and had fled
to her room. The next day she had called Angel and had lunch with him to try and
figure out how to combine their lives. She'd take a life in hell with it's ruler
over her mother's matchmaking any day.
"Did you have a bad dream?" Her Mom sat on the bed with a
concerned look on her face.
Buffy replied with a non-committal, "Uuummm." What was she to
say? 'Hey Mom I've been having lusty dreams for the man that I hate for the past
week, every time I close my eyes. And by the way, I'm carrying his child.' She
somehow thought that wouldn't go over too well.
Buffy hadn't yet told her mother that she was pregnant. It was hard
because her Mom wouldn't stop talking about some guy named William, who was just
soooo adorable. While smiling politely and nodding her head Buffy could only
think, 'Someone find a bucket. This afternoon's lunch is about to make a
reappearance.' The guy was supposed to come over tonight for dinner. None of her
pleading had done any good. Joyce was just bound and determined that Buffy
should meet this guy.
"Do you need something to drink or eat?"
"No I'm just going to try and go back to sleep." Buffy
fervently hoped that her mom would just leave it at that. She really didn't want
to discuss the details with her. After she had been kissed and fussed over Buffy
stared blankly at the wall wondering if there was anything that she could think
about that would not make her dream
of Angel. She decided to replay a lecture from her old high school principal
over and over in her mind. That ought to do it.
~~~~~
Across town Angel woke up in a cold sweat breathing hard. His dreams had been
far less pleasurable than Buffy's. They had started out okay then quickly
nose-dived. He and Buffy had been playing with their son in the park. The sun
was shining and laughter filled the air. He had felt happy. Complete.
Then Buffy had grabbed their son’s hand and began to walk away. He
started running after them when Buffy turned to look at him and said,
"We're going away now. We will be a happy family with you. Never to see you
again. Finally." As the end of her words a dark cloud or presence enveloped
them and then they disappeared.
The dream left him anxious and with a terrible need to see Buffy.
Looking at the clock he figured that if he were to go traipsing over to her
house at three in the morning it would probably shatter the peace that they had
managed to find. At the beginning of their lunch last week both had been so
hostile to each other that management had come out and threatened to call the
police. After that they had managed to calm down enough to talk through things.
His job was in LA and there was really no reason for him to change
locations. His salary was going to be higher than most college grads and he
didn't have to interview around since he owned half of the company. So Buffy had
reluctantly agreed to move to LA with him but only at the end of the summer. She
was going to take summer classes before the baby was born in Sunnydale before
taking a year off of school. He had to leave next week and then it would be
another two months before he came back to get her.
That amount of time was beginning to make him nervous. Anything could
happen in the next few months with him gone. He was already having trouble with
her halfway across town how was he going to handle being months away from his
child. A part of him wanted to spend the next seven and a half months staring at
her stomach to make sure that nothing happened to his child, but it wasn't
practical.
But while he was still in town he was going to spend a lot of time with
her starting this evening. He had to have lunch meeting with his partner but
after that he was going to go get Buffy and spend it with her. Nothing was going
to take them away from him.
~~~~~
Buffy sighed for the fifth time in ten minutes as she reached into her closet to
change her shirt again.
William was set to come over in a few minutes and her mother had been
running around in a nervous state for hours. Every time Buffy went downstairs
she was in the middle of checking to make sure that everything was just right
for the thousandth time. She also found something wrong with Buffy outfit each
time. First it was that this was a nice dinner and she shouldn't wear pants.
Then she should definitely wear blue with that skirt. Of course Buffy also
should have known that only strappy heels went with her outfit and not
comfortable flats. Then obviously she shouldn't wear a turtle neck because she
would get too hot.
On one of her trips downstairs Buffy had disgruntled asked, "If you
like him so much why don't you marry him?"
Her mother just got That Look. That Look can't really be described.
Every mother has their own version of it and there is nothing more intimidating
than it. It threatens, promises, assured of its victory. That Look seems to send
laser beams of disappointment at you to make you squirm. It's as compelling as
Chinese torture to make you do right. Buffy had reluctantly retreated upstairs
to do as she was told and practice fake smiles.
Downstairs Buffy could hear the doorbell chime. She looked in the mirror
and sighed, "Well I might as well get this over with."
From the living room came a masculine British voice that intrigued her.
Walking into the room she stopped abruptly and had to struggle to keep her jaw
from dropping. Seated on the couch was a skinny, bleached blonde, Billy Idol
wannabe. 'Oh she can't be serious. It looks like I could break him in half. And
his hair! What was my mother thinking!'
But the effects of That Look were still in effect and so she walked
forward with a smile on her face and her hand outstretched, "Hello, I'm
Buffy."
Shaking her hand firmly he replied, "Spike."
Buffy raised her eyebrows and bit back a laugh. Her mother explained
with amused tolerance, "It's a nickname that William likes to use with his
friends. Well I’m just going to go and check on dinner and leave you two here
to talk."
Buffy sent a panicked look at her Mom but she was already out of the
room. Sitting down next to Spike she looked at the ceiling and said,
"So."
~~~~~
Angel felt excited and relaxed. His meeting with his partner had gone on longer
than he expected but now he was on his way to pick up Buffy. He hadn't quite
figured out what to do with her but he knew that he needed to see her and their
baby after his disturbing dream.
At their door he wrung the doorbell and waited politely. It was opened
by an older woman with blonde hair that he assumed was Buffy's mother,
"Hello I'm looking for Buffy. Is she in?"
Joyce looked at him for a long minute and felt immediately suspicious of
this man. He was far too old and attractive and she wondered what he could want
with Buffy. Nevertheless she invited him in, "Yes, come in, she's in the
living room."
The sight that greeted him when he went into the living room caused him
to clench his hands in anger. Buffy and some blonde guy were sitting on the
couch laughing. Well Buffy was only smiling but Angel hadn't been around her
long enough to recognize it as a fake smile, and Spike had put his hand on
Buffy's knee just before Angel entered. A part of Angel wanted to rush over and
beat the man to a bloody pulp, but he managed to suppress the urge. Joyce
noticed his anger and filled the memory away for later.
Buffy had stood up abruptly when Angel entered the room and now she
nervously said, "A-angel? Uhm, what a surprise. Why are you here?"
Angel crossed over to her and enveloped her in a hug while glaring
daggers at Spike, "I missed you." Holding Spike's gaze he bent his
head and placed a small possessive kiss on her neck. Into her ear he whispered,
"If you think that some new boy toy will keep my child away from me think
again. I don't care what you do after it's born, but while you are pregnant you
will stay single. After that you can whore around all you like."
Buffy had originally felt rescued by Angel when he hugged her and was
grateful to him and then he whispered in her ear. Now she felt moved to
violence, but the presence of her mother and Spike held her back. So she wrapped
her arms around him and leaned up to whisper back, "If you think I'm such a
whore how do you know the child is yours?" She bit down on his ear lobe
sharply and she could have sworn that he growled.
"Buffy, do you want to tell me what's going on?" Her mother
interrupted their interlude. Angel turned to face her with a smile on her face.
He kept an arm around Buffy with his hand resting over their child.
Joyce questioned somewhat horrified, "Is this your boyfriend?"
Angel wanted to deny it and run but one look at Spike had him speaking
before Buffy could, "Yes, I am."
Buffy glared up at him but he only smirked at her and tightened his
grip. Determined to wipe his smirk off she placed her hand on his chest,
"Yes me and Angel have been together for a few weeks. We can hardly bear to
be apart. It was like love at first sight."
Angel tried but in the end he couldn't hold onto his smile. Grabbing her
even tighter he whispered, "Don't you think that you're taking this a
little far darling?"
Keeping her smile she answered back, "You started it dear."
Seeing the genuine smile on Buffy's face Joyce decided that now was not
the best time to voice her objections. As composed as she could be she said,
"Well then, if you'd like to stay, we were about to have dinner."
Gesturing to Spike who had a sullen look on his face she said, "This is our
guest Spike."
