MDMA, or ecstasy, is a psychedelic amphetamine taht has gained popularity over the past 20 years because of its ability to produce strong feelings of comfort, empathy, and connection to others. It most frequently comes in tablet form, although it is ocasionally sold in capsules or as a powder. It is most frequently taken orally though it is occasionally snorted.

MDMA was first synthesized and patented by Merck Pharmaceuticals in 1912 and patented in 1914., but it wasn't until the mid 1970's that articles related to its psychoactivity began showing up. In the 70's and 80's it was used as a psychotherapeutic tool and also started becoming available on the street. Its growing popularity led to it being made illegal in the US in 1985 and its popularity has continued to increase since then.
Depending on how much and how recently you have eaten, Ecstasy usually takes 30-60 minutes (although sometimes as long as 2 hours) to take effect. Unlike many other psychoactives, the onset is very quick. Once you start to notice the effects you are already heading quickly towards the peak. The quick "launch" towards the peak can be unnerving, feeling a bit like it's too quick and hard to know when its going to end.

The effects usually last 3-4 hours.  For some there may be a 2-6 hour period afterwards where it is hard to sleep, and there is a definite shift from reality. Some users experience a dramatic worsening of mood as the peak effects wear off, often called the "crash". This is often the result of coming down from a wonderful experience, not wanting the feelings to go away, and being sad, scared, or annoyed afterwards. Carshes do not happen after every experience and some users never experience them. Many people also experience a noticeable shift in mood for several days after use; for some this is a period of depression while other experience lifted mood. Some people may also feel very drained the day after use.
An ecstasy overdose happens when you consume more Ecstasy than your body can safely handle. Ecstasy users are constantly flirting with drug overdose. By November of 1995 50 to 60 people had died dure to either an overdose or dehydration because of ecstasy.  Occurrences of Ecstasy overdoses continue to rise.
