| I think, most of you dont know this sport or think, that it is just something for old people. Well, in Germany it is also a sport esp. for people in the middle ages and younger. We have about 20 Square Dance clubs in Hamburg!!! I am a member of the Hanseatics Squares since 3 years, but I dance since about 10 years. I was a member of a folkdance group for 10 years, and there we learnt even some Square Dances, which was very interesting and nice. Square Dance is an American folkdance, which is danced in squares of 8 people, that are 4 couples with a man and a woman position. Then there is a caller and he is calling the dance figures to country, pop, rock, ... music. Ive even danced to a techno song some years ago!!! Anyway, the caller sings the figures and we dancer dance them. Thats it. The clue is, that you dance a whole song and after it you are back at your starting place with your old partner. Its a little bit magic. :) Most women dance in petticoats, colourful skirts and shirts. There are also Pettipants, so nobody can see your slip. The men are wearing jeans or black trousers, a shirt and a small towel, where the ladies can clean their hands. No cowboy-huts are allowed!!! There are some different levels. Basic: that are the basic 50 figures Mainstream: Basic + 15 new figures Plus: MS + 30 new figures Advanced 1: P + several new figures There are also higher levels, but not really many people dance it.Usually, you start with a Class, where you learn about 65 figures, that means MS level. After it you can dance at most other clubs and specials. All other figures are basing on the MS figures, so you should dance them from your heart!!! Square Dance is fun and you meet many new people. You can visit every club in the world and collect their dangles (small pendants withthe club sign on it). Ive been to London in a club there and that was really great! You can dance wherever you are. Doesnt that sound like a good hobby? LINKS: - the page of the "European Association of American Square Dance", EAASDC. Here you find information about the history of Square Dance, links to several pages and addresses of the clubs. Check it out! - You are in North Germany and want to dance? Check this link for addresses around Hamburg. - One of my favourite clubs has a really nice page. They are the "Flying Ladybirds" and are situated in Kaltenkirchen, my birthtown. Some of my friends are dancing there. So when you dance there, say "HELLO" to Svenja, Ingrid and Kiki. Thanks! - And there is an American page about Square Dance. - My club hasnt a very big homepage, but when you want to have us on your next feast, then go here. |
