| The Power of Prayer Last summer I went with my church youth group on a mission trip to the Bahamas, where twice a day we performed a puppet show for youngsters in parks and schools. And twice a day, it seemed, our old school bus broke down. One hot afternoon we were on our way to a performance when the bus came to a sudden halt. "Not again," everyone grumbled. Our youth leaders, Bill and Daryl, stepped out to see what was wrong. Up until then I had maintained a good attitude about the bus's unreliability, but this was the last straw. We were stuck on a deserted side street in the sweltering heat with not even a phone booth nearby to call someone for help. "Guys," Daryl reported, "this is serious. Our clutch has broken and the bolt that holds it together has fallen off somewhere back on the road. We had a big bucket of spare nuts and bolts, but not one of them fits. Just pray." We joined hands and fervently asked God for help. When we looked up, we saw an odd sight. Bill was kneeling on the pavement, picking something out of the asphalt with his pocket knife. He leaned under the hood of the bus with the object, then came to us with a big smile on his face. "As you were praying, I looked down and there beside the tire, embedded in the pavement, was an old bolt. On an outside chance I dug it up and screwed it on. It fit!" The bus started up again and we drove to the puppet show, filled with awe at the power of prayer. Author Unknown |
