Chris's Flying Page

Chris Flying! Yay :)
I never considered Pilot when asked what I wanted to be when I grow up. I thought you had to be:
1. Incredibly wealthy (I am Far from it),
2. or in the military,
3. and very, very brave (I cannot even climb a ladder--afraid of heights).

I was intrigued by planes and was afraid of flying for a spell, which led me to learn more. When I found out that a co-worker of my dad's was also a flight instructor, I realized this was a possibility. I started flying at 24...I love it... sometimes, when I am in the plane, I think, Wow, I am flying, I must have accidentally got somebody else's life for a day.
Flying is a challenge and a skill requiring practice and knowledge, yet also a wonderful thing, a thing of poetry.

It is not so difficult to get started...

Most of the pilots and instructors I train with tell me they dream of flying a Boeing, Gulfstream, regional jet, airliner, etc... but I have fallen in love with the unattainable. The Beech Starship is the most beautiful airplane, in my humble opinion. I can only say that going by pictures I have seen: unfortunately, there are only four left flying.

My First Solo...

...in a Cessna 152, N94555...

...August 6, 2003...

...(thanks to Neil for taking these pics)

Pictures!!

Friday the 13th, June, 2003. The Point in Pittsburgh, PA, when my sister came along.

Another view of Pittsburgh on the flight with my sister.

Allegheny County Airport

UPS New Stanton hub, where Tim works.

Can you find our apartment?? Its a white building, below center. There are a few cars in the small lot behind it. Our neighbor, Paul, is barely visible on his bike beside Tim's blue truck.

Beechcraft 1900, Feb, 2003. Going to NE, I wanted to fly on a small commuter plane... So I flew from the local airport in Latrobe to Pittsburgh (where I had a 3 hour layover before going on to Chicago, instead of driving 1.5 hrs to Pittsburgh!). (Thanks, Tim for the pic!)

Embraer Regional Jet 145, December, 2001. Taken thru the glare in the window at Omaha.

My sister leaving Pittsburgh, June 2001.

Winter, 1997. One of my professors in college took us on an aerial field trip. I made sure I took another of his classes the next semester.

Winter, 1997. Northland College, Ashland, WI. Lake Superior (Chequamegon Bay) in the background.

December, 1996. I think this was a Saab 340 (?) going by the ticketing info.

March, 1996. My first flight, visiting Northland College with my mom. Part of the reason I went to school so far away was because it was the only way I'd be guaranteed a flight once a year (home for Christmas).
