My Dave Mackey Tribute: |
| Dave Mackey was a grinder with little name recognition. No opposing
fans knew his name and only his home town fans with extensive knowledge of their
team could point him out. And he played 14 seasons in professional hockey loving
his role. He wasn't a flashy scorer, nor was he a force to be reckoned with on
the ice. He did, however, give his all every night, and played for a reason few
still do: For Love of the Game. During his tenure with the Saint Louis
Blues between 1991 and 1994, he was shuttled numerous times between the main
club and their minor league affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. While he played with
the Blues, he wore the number 23 on his jersey. That number will never be
retired to the rafters of the Savvis Center, but will always mean something
special to the true fans who appreciated his skills and determination. July 12,
2000 was the day he decided to hang up his skates. In his last season, he joined
the Chicago Wolves of the International Hockey League, and fittingly, was a
member of the Turner Cup International Hockey League Championship squad.
Although few will realize he is gone, the game will be worse off without him.
Thank You for all of the memories, Dave. You truly will be missed.
