My
hunt for an apartment is progressing with phone tag
and viewing various potential places to live. I looked
at my third apartment this morning and began my latest
adventure.
The appointment was for 8:15 AM at Grand and Western Avenues. I didn't want to take a lot of time off from work. Sasha was about 20 minutes late getting there. While I waited I finally called their office on my cell phone. During my conversation I saw that she had arrived and said good-bye to whoever I was talking to and got out of my car. The apartment is beautiful and I may rent it. It's definitely big enough, there is a working fireplace and a GARAGE! Afterwards, as I crossed Western Avenue to my car I reached in my pocket for my keys and they weren't there. I checked my coat pockets because sometimes I'll drop them in there because it's easier that hiking up my coat to put them in my pants pockets. They were not in my coat pockets either. By this time I was at the door of my car, I looked in and there they were, in the ignition. I tried to open the door and of course it was locked. It's nine o'clock by now and I thought I had a meeting at ten. I discussed my situation with Sasha for a bit and she persuaded me to wait for the man she was meeting there who might be able to get into my car. When he arrived we discussed the lock on my car and he couldn't get in with a coat hanger as suspected. I had done it with a coat hanger and the type of lock on my car a dacade ago but it took me at least an hour. I didn't have the time nor did I tell him it could be done. I just got on the Grand Avenue bus and went to work. While I waited for the bus I called my landlord and explained my situation to his answering machine. If he could let me into my apartment I could get my spare set of keys and everything would be OK. I left my cell phone number and anxiously awaited for him to return my call. I was in meetings all day at work. So, I tried calling him again at four o'clock and he answered the phone. A rarity when I've tried to call him in the past. He hadn't received my message so I simply told him I was locked out of my apartment. He asked if I had a car and I said no. He wasn't sure if he had a key to my apartment... he would check and call me back. He called back a little later to tell me he found one. The next thing was the logistics of getting me into my apartment. He couldn't leave his home because he was taking care of his kids. I told him I could get to his house and pick up the key. When I arrived and he gave me the key I asked for a key to the building and told him I had locked my keys in my car. He rumaged though a box on the table and came up with keys to the basement door. They'd get me into the building and if not I would rely on the kindness of my neighors to buzz me in... The key worked on the back basement door's deadbolt but the knob was also lock and required a different key. I was hoping the deadbolt on the front of the building was keyed the same but it wasn't. I was force to buzz one of my neighbors and they let me in without even asking who I was on the intercom. I don't know if it ws Mike or Suzy but I'll go knock on there door and thank them when I finish writing this. I basically walked into my apartment and grabbed my spare set of keys and left. My cats just sorta looked at me with that look of wonder saying, "What the hell is wrong with you..." I just wanted to get to my car and drive it home. Of course, as I approached Grand Avenue the bus was pulling away. I waited for about 15 minute before the next one came. At least now I'm home and have all my keys and a little time
to write here and tell you about this miserable adventure. Oh,
and I'm going to look at another apartment tomorrow. I think I
may walk... It's just down the street. |
