Chris Maus  [RAMBLE INDEX]

My Web Archive

I aint feeling real well today and there's too much I want to write about... This whole .cjm idea sorta nauziates me at the moment. So, if you stumble across this page, then I'm sorry. I spent 147 daze trying to write something daily for this web site. I won't go into all the things that I know are wrong with my attempts at being a writer... (which I aint) I will however go off on the joys and pains of these things called computers and technology in general...

The present thorn in my side is the chain letter/e-mails that proliferate on this wire we call the internet. This is going to be my general response and demonstration of the power of the technology. Signing up for a mailing list or even forwarding a message sent to several different people is maybe not such a good idea. I am going to take a break from this Ramble and get all the e-mail addresses that are in my In-Box...

After hours of twiddling the bits in my "In-Box" I have found 3647 differnt e-mail addresses. The question is what to do with this information. There is a common annoyance with "spam" and I feel the urge to pull the feedback I got when I started spamming people...

First of all... I still have my remove lists and will use them. If someone takes the time to ask me to remove them from my list then I can take the time to do so...

Sat Oct 30 10:35:43 CDT 1999 I would like to start a spam debate...

This was a response from the spam I sent out: As a musician myself, I understand the importance of self-promotion BUT I am incredibly against spam mail, which is what you sent me. I know a lot of people feel the same. You may want to re-think your strategy to avoid turning people off all together.

AND I'm still struggling with the tactic. I've done it twice now in the last month. ANYONE who does NOT want to get e-mails from me is imediately removed from my lists.

I also do not share or sell my lists. Unfortunately, my first spam included everyone's address. Sorry, it won't happen again.

Thu Nov 4 09:52:10 CST 1999 Spam's a funny thing. By definition it's any unsolicited email that you get. Of course this includes about 99% of the email that one gets, and the other 1% means that you've spammed somebody else first. Not to mention that it takes less to delete a spam message than to throw away some junk mail, and it costs you less to send it as well...

Bottom line is that, from what I gather, you're sending out info on where you can be seen and heard to your friends and some business associates. How can that be spam? Next thing you know, you'll have the same people crying to you because they missed a gig and 'how come you didn't tell me about it.' If they don't want email er- I mean spam, they shouldn't have given out their email address.

Unfortunately, I used a tactic that some people feel is wrong. AND I sorta agree with them... I received an e-mail that had 300 addresses in it and I used those addresses as my spam victims. I have also changed the way I do my mailing lists so that I don't include the addresses of everyone getting the message.

So, I am of the opinion (at the moment) that if I get a message with e-mail addresses in it then I can send those addresses one e-mail message (a reply to ALL) and include a message on how to be removed from my list.

I'm hoping the fallout from my last spam has settled... I don't know what I do differently but I don't get spammed very often. So, either my ISP has some filters or my e-mail address is not getting out there.

I'm also curious as to why people don't leave anonymous messages "here". This would be a good place to convince me that I shouldn't be "spamming" people. Simple "Remove me" messages tell me that I can keep it up and just not bother the people who are kind enough to tell me I am bothering them.

E-MAIL(spam) (11/17/1999)

I've resorted to spamming people. So, here's something to consider when you forward and chain-letter or use a mailing list. (Some advice I got was to get as many e-mail addresses as possible) My best resource for addresses is my own "InBox". You may want to take me off your mailling lists because I'll be writing to the same people you do if you include their addresses with the messages you send to me... Also, I remove everyone who asks to be removed from my mailling list.

OK... time to get back to today...

I had no idea that the magnitude of e-mail addresses in my "In-Box" would be what it is... I seriously suspect that most people are unaware of the potential abuse / annoyance that can be created by their own mailing lists... I know! I really blew it with my first spam...

At some point I will be sending an abridged version of this "Ramble..." to those 3647 addresses in an attempt to raise the awareness of the power of e-mail...

Until then...
