Chris Maus  [RAMBLE INDEX]

My Web Archive
Hi Everyone...

I'm not too sure where to begin... How `bout I just recap the month of July? Work has been it's usual tedium. It appears I will be getting a new assignment soon. If the trend continues, 9 months is a non-challenging position, I will have to shake things up a bit. I'll be going to a meeting tomorrow at my potential next assignment which may as well be on Mars because it's half way between Chicago and Wisconsin. I can still get there via public transportation (I think...) and it will be a two train, one bus and 90 minutes to two hours of commuting each way. It's also frustrating because I have not gotten the information I need to get to this meeting. (like an address of the place) All I know right now is it's near the intersection of Town Line Road and Milwaukee Avenue, by some shopping mall nobody knows the name of. I'm only a little upset about this because it's the typical mode of operations for Paranet.

Anyway, the music thang is slowly progressing... I played to a small crowd at Emmit's Pub on Saturday July 11. I feel like it went OK but I know I need to work some things out. I'm not real happy with the sound system I have. I need to tweak it a bit. I did get a $5 tip from somebody and lot's of compliments so I haven't gotten discouraged yet... It was kinda cute when I was done, Rocky, a regular at Emmit's who I met for the first time, put about 10 Sinatra songs on the juke box and told me I needed to play this kind of music if I want to really make it. I told him, "But I want to do it my way". He didn't even smile so the conversation sort of fizzled at that point. He did buy me a shot though.

Three nights later, on Tuesday, I played a party for Corn Productions. I picked up the car I rented for the week that morning so I had wheels. I tried something a little different that night. I just took my electric guitar, mic and my can amp that I use as a monitor. It worked out pretty well. It was a pretty full bill of music that night. Three other acts played besides me. I went first , then the band "Love Kit" played followed by Third Person. Then Shawn Martin wrapped up the evening. Best of all, I swapped CD's with "Love Kit". They actually have a label backing them.

That week with wheels continued at a rather hectic pace. Wednesday I went to listen to David Grisman and Bella Fleck and the Flecktones at the Ravinia Festival. Another late night... I hit the road for Minneapolis at 8:00am Thursday morning. The Minnetonka Challenge was Saturday July 18 and one of the reasons I was going to Minneapolis. I found Alison at her job and got keys for her place. I was feeling pretty grimy so I showered and hung out at her place until she got home. I took her out for dinner at the Black Forest. Friday was a bit busy. Alison left for work and I had my agenda fairly planned out in my head and on the notebook computer I brought with me from work. I putzed around on my computer and made some phone calls. My agenda was: A Tex Mex at The New Uptown Diner, A visit with Perry at his shop, drop off Alison's keys, hang out with my family at Mary's house, get the canoe from Mary Ellen and go to bed early...

We rolled out of bed at 5:15 and headed over to Dick's, piled into his van with the canoe on top, picked up Perry and headed to Lake Minnetonka for "The Challenge...". With the navigational assistance of Dick and Perry I made it across Lake Minnetonka. It took me over 3 hours and I was a bit disappointed it took so long but it was my first time so I know what I'm in for if I decide to do it again next year. I took my crew out for breakfast afterwards. We were all famished after spending over 3 hours on or in the lake so we went to the first place we could think of for food that was close. (Denny's) We then returned the canoe to Mary Ellen's. When Alison and I returned to her apartment I took a 3 hour nap. I didn't recover from "The Challenge" for a few days. I was sore and stiff until Tuesday or Wednesday that week. Sunday Alison and I went to Richmond and Cold Spring. It was good to see the enhancements at Paula and Gary's estate. Then we invaded Mom and Dad's for dinner.

Lessee... It seems like it's been longer than 2 weeks since I was in Minnesota. But then not much else has happened since then. Some other developments are: I have a web page now, I have a concert scheduled at the SweetCorn Playhouse on August 23, and have been looking for more gigs.

I went to The Beat Kitchen last night to check it out and drop off my CD for the person who books the music. I'll be following up on that soon. So my URL is:

it's a freebie so there are some annoying things I haven't figured out how to turn off but I'm having fun building up the pages. Who knows what I'll be putting up there...

So, that's all for this Ramble...
