Punta Cana It was in 1969 that a wealthy American from Puerto Rico was flying over the southeast end of the Dominican Republic. Looking for a place to establish an Merchant Marine School, he came across an an isolated strip of beach with sand so white and the ocean so clear and tranquil. Protected by a coral reel which extends the length of the beach (8km) he had just discovered what is known today as Bavaro Beach. Persuading other fellow American investors, they purchased a piece of this land and open the first hotel the "Punta Cana Club". By 1978 the small hotel had disappeared and was its replaced by "Club Meditterannee Punta Cana". This would be the first international resort in the area. Today there are numerous resorts located along this beach front, and it has become one of Dominican Republic hot spots for tourism. The area though developed has managed to keep that tranquility and beauty that has attracted visitors for more than three decades. Located not more that 15 minutes from Bavaro is the Punta Cana International Airport. Open in 1984 to accommodate the increase in tourism in the area, the airport gives visitors the feeling of the Caribbean the minute you get off the plane. The buildings designed with thatched hut roofs offers the luxuries of most modern day facilities. Bavaro Beach spreads over 23 miles of white sandy beach. There is not much to do in the area and entertainment is supplied mainly by the 24 resorts that line the beach. The newest attraction to the area is the Manatee Park at abvaro Beach. The park has exhibitions of animals, birds, and fish, resident performing dolphins, sea lions, and a number of parrots. There is also a replica of a Taino Indian village. |
