Independence:

After the declaration of the Dominican Republic's  independence
in 1844, by the writer Duarte, the lawyer Snchez and
the soldier Mella, the country underwent yet another period of
instability, including more Haitian incursions and, in 1861, a four-year
re-annexion with Spain. Independence was regained in the War of
Restoration (la Restauracin), but with no respite in factional fighting
or economic disorder. Apart from the dictatorship of Ulises Heureaux
(1882-84, 1887-99), governments were short-lived. The country must
be one of the very few where a Roman Catholic archbishop has
served as head of state: Archbishop Merio was President from 1880
                         to 1882.
