The Kids Long Hair Page

This is a Web Page for young males that are trying to grow their hair. You are going to wonder about alot of things like, How long does it take? Im going to try and answer most of them. Firstly I want to take a look at one of the most difficult thing a young male has to deal with when he's growing his hair:

Parents!

Parent's are a huge problem. Firstly you don't wnt to tell them your growing your hair. Then you don't kno how to tell them. Then you don't know when to tell them. There is a very simple way to handle each and every one of these problems: don't tell them (tried and tested by me!) It works. You'll want them to find out eventually otherwise they will figure out what you're doing and you'll have to deal with a succesion of akward questions which is not the way to spend you saturday. Here's a couple of ways to let them know.

Once you can work around your parents, there's nothing stopping you.

Freak!

Once your hair is long, you'll belong to a small Minority(a small group) For example in my secondary school in 2005, there was one boy in first year, one in second year, three in third year, none in fourth year, six in fifth year and three in sixth year. Thats fourteen out of something like seven hundered boys in the school that have long hair. Thats not alot. You will be classed as a freak. Be prepared for alot of abuse especially from kids in your school. If your parents threaten to cut it off in the middle of the night, don't listen to them. If you think they're serious, threaten to shave their hair off first. That usually shuts them up. It's the kids to worry about. If you learn a few good come backs you should be fine. For example if a kid asks "Why do you have long hair?" and you know he/she is just trying to be akward, say " Why does your ma' have long hair?" If he /she says "My ma' doesn't have long hair," say "She did last night." (This come back was used by this guy in fifth year)

How long should I grow it?

This is obviously up to you. But I suggest you ask why you want long hair. If your a musician, you might want it to come down half way between your shoulder and your elbow. This should take about four years of growing. If you want it for sport, you might just let it grow down to your shoulders. That should take about a year and a half. If you just want long hair, you would probably let it grow to your waist. That takes about six years. Once your hair is long you want to decide how you're going to wear it. If you're a musician, you might keep it in a tail and let it down when you're playing music. If its for sport, leave it down and put yor fringe and sides in a tail behind your head when you're playing sport. If you just want long hair, probably leave it down the whole time. (These are just suggestions. Do what ever you want with your hair. Be creative!)

Your Hair

You have to start looking after your hair once it's long. There are two types of hair Traight and curly. Both will require different types of manegement. Obviously you need to wash both. With straight hair I would say condition it. With my curly hair, I never condition it. It just goes really frizzy, thats a very bad thing when your growing your hair. One product I find extremely brilliant is coconut oil. You can get it in afro or aisian shops. It looks like coconut and when you put in your hands it sort of melts. When you put the oil in your hair, it looks like it's wet and stays that way.I highly recomend it as opposed to conditioning. It your hair's straight then condition it and leave it, you have nothing to worry about. Only wash your hair about twice a week or it will get too dry. Greasey hair is better than dry hair (in my opinion.)

When your growing your hair, DONT GET IT CUT!!! Some people will tell you that getting little bits cut off every once in a while helps it grow. IT DOESNT! If your intersted in science, here's the proof: Your hair is not a living tissue. The only part that's living is the root. Therefor, cutting the end can have no effect on its growth.

Once your hair is long your eventualy going to cut it to give it some sort of style or preventing it from growing too long. When you're growing your hair, DONT GET IT CUT!!!!! Once it's long and you need it cut, get your mum to cut the ends off for you. STAY AWAY FROM BARBERS AND HAIRDRESSERS!! if your hair is to your elbows of longer, try cutting it by yourself. My friend does it and he does a great job. I got to hom cut mine once. Unless you want your hard work on the floor of a barber shop, take my advice.

Your Diet

I know this sounds crazy, but your diet affects your hair (Who Knew?) The Vitamens your hair needs are not in friut and veg! I don't have a clue what these magic vvitamins are in but if you're eating a balanced diet, you should be getting enough of these. There are vitamin supplements you can take for your hair. I DO NOT ENCOURAGE THESE! Ask your parents if you're going to take them. I strongly reccomend the cheaper and healthier way of having a balanced diet.

Short to Long

Once your hair is long you notice many differences To deal with knots, you just have to brush them out. It's alot easier if your hair's wet. Start at the bottom and work your way up when your brushing them out. It moves! It feels great, but it means it gets caught in stuff much easier. You'll pay much more attention to your hair when it's long. If you're wearing it in a tail, you'll take it out and put it back in every ten minutes or so. If you're wearing it down, you'll constatly fiddle with it. Your friends will develop an obsession with touching it. In the begining thats really annoying, but your fiends grow out of it, eventualy.

Ways of Doing your Hair

This is the fun part. You have full control here. You get to do whatever you want with your hair. i'm going to talk about the three ways I do Mine: Braids/Plaits, Bandannas, Pony tails.

Braids/Plaits

I'm Irish so I'm going to call it a plait but other nationalities might know them a braids. This is where you divide your hair into three strands. You put the outside one into the middle and reapeat on the other side. If you live in a small town like I do, you would get so much abuse by doing this, but in larger towns and cities you can do anything you want and people wouldn't notice. I use these on holidays in hot countries. They look great. If you have sisters with long hair, ask her to show you how to do them, she will more than likeley know.

Bandannas

These really arent that complicated. You take the bandanna and fold it in half diagonnaly. You take the two opposite corners and use them to tie around your head. You then tuck the remainig corner and tuck it in behind the knot. I use this most of the time when I'm not in school.

Pony Tails

This is what I do My hair like when I'm in school. I have a black Tie that I got a couple of years ago. I strongly reccomend black ones, they look great. NOTE: DO NOT USE ONE OF YOUR SISTERS SPARKLY ONES OR SCRUNCHIES, buy your own, and I reccomend plain colours to minimalize abuse.

Other Styles

Bun:this puts your hair in a ball shape. I use it when I'm sleeping because it makes your hair relatively knot free in the morning.
Dreadlocks: They look great but they get really annoying after a while.

Clothes

Some clothes are going to cause problems for your hair. Some clothes just don't look good with long hair. Try to avoid zippers, velcro and snap buttons becuse your hair can get caught in them.I cant let you talk here about your hair but if you want to,click here to go to the mens long hair site. CLick on the mens long hair Hyperboard and talk to other long hairs (Mostly adults.)

Before I finish I just want to say Congratulations on Deciding to grow you Hair

Congratulations

Chris
