| ****WARNING***** On this page I reserve the right to be petulant, arrogant, irreverent, and generally flaunt my opinions and prejudices. After all that is the point of the internet, isn't it? Well, everyone enjoys a good moan, don't they. Film dislikes Mickey and Mallory Knox in the film 'Natural Born Killers'. People who laugh during the sinking in 'Titanic'. Jar-Jar Binks in 'The Phantom Menace' (for being intensely irritating). Film violence which is apparently gratuitous - in other words is not mitigated by fulfilling some plot function. The needless massacre of the Y-wing pilots in 'Star Wars - A New Hope'. The Y-wing has a swivel mounted gun, with which they could have defended themselves.* 'Moonraker' - a complete farce compared to Ian Fleming's brilliant novel. Film classifications which allow children to see people being torn to pieces before they are allowed to watch two people in sexual intercourse. Horror films. I go to the cinema for excitement, exhilaration, fun, entertainment, humour. Oddly enough I don't generally enjoy being horrified, frightened or disgusted. This is not to say that I am "chicken" - I have seen quite a few horror films. * It is has been pointed out to me that due to an extraordinary conspiracy of events, it would have been impossible for the pilots to operate the swivel guns at the battle of Yavin. Whilst this highly unconvincing technical explanation justifies what was essentially a directorial decision, I still don't think that the strategy of flying in formation in a straight line while the TIE fighters picked them off was very clever! Phrases I dislike "Don't be cheeky" - this is not a valid response in either conversation or argument. The implication is that the person saying it is above criticism. "Sorry isn't good enough" - Sorry must always be good enough. There is no other word in the English language for the purpose. "Wipe that smile off your face" - The person is annoyed that you have more self control than them. Euphemisms; I did not take my pet rat to the vet to be "put down" or "put to sleep", but to be killed humanely. At the end of my life I will not "pass away" but DIE! Academic dislikes EXAMS! Calculus, integration, differentiation. I don't actually hate mathematics, but it only interests me when I can see a useful/fun application for it. Being taught the obvious - "Can you name some components of a computer?" Not being taught the difficult adequately. |
