Subway certainly kicks off with style, I love that first scene with the car chase and I love 80s music so the music score there was a treat.
After that it kinda tails off into a very relaxed, surreal flick that's always fun, but never rises into what I'd call greatness. It's certainly a very popular movie, both now and when it was released all those years ago. At least I got to see it in French with subtitles like it's supposed to be seen, it's shown quite often here in Australia on SBS.
Christophe has a fairly average outing here, nothing too remarkable about his performance, which is ironic since he won a Cesar for it.
He believes it was mainly because he was so popular at the time, and I tend to agree.
That's not to say he wasn't good though, and that image of him with the hair, the tux and that light stick thingy that looks kinda like a light sabre is one of the great images of 80s cinema.
Issabella Adjani is wonderful as well, with a dazzling smile, pity she's playing the ice queen most of the time ;) and it's also nice to see Jean Reno in an early role, playing the drummer.
He would of course go on to star in Luc Besson's highly acclaimed Leon (aka The Professional).
Overall, Subway is fun, lightweight stuff, and is worth looking at particularly when you're feeling nostalgic for the good ol' 80s (though I was only around for 6 of them myself).
