| It's definatly the chess factor that elevates Knight Moves from an ordinary seriel killer flick to a great one. We've seen plenty of crazy religious dudes going around killing people, but who's ever heard of someone *just* wanting to play a game? All the puzzles the killer sets are good fun, and it's a credit to everyone involved that it's dificult not to be on the edge of your seat for the majority of the second half of the movie. Brad Mirman has given us a very clever script, that can make us suspicious of almost every character we encounter in the movie, even Christophe's character himself (Peter Sanderson), who after Mean Guns, has to be the least heroic character he's ever played. He doesn't seem too worried when that first woman gets killed, and the audience is always wondering at his motivations, though I wouldn't ever consider him being the killer. Christophe looks right at home playing Sanderson, and he seems to have a few more facial expressions up his sleeve then in many other movies. I particularly like that time he's facing the camera just as the cops walk off, and he very subtely curls up his lip like he really is laughing at them. This is the second time he and Diane Lane have appeared togther (the first one was Priceless Beauty), and while this is a far superior movie, we're still not seeing them boith in top form. It's ironic because where Christophe was easily the weaker last time, in Knight Moves it's Diane who struggles somewhat. She seems tired, and a little disinterested for most of the movie: What a pity, we know she's capable of much more. You'd never guess they were married in real life when you're watching the movie, even during the love scene they're not exactly steaming up the screen. As for the suppporting cast, Daniel Baldwin (also known as 'The Fat Baldwin') is obviously having fun playing the hot-headed Wagner, and Tom Skerrit is solid as Captain Sedman, although I thought it was a little nasty of Mirman to kill him off at the very end, it just seemed pointless. Every time I watch Knight Moves, I come out of it wanting to have a game of chess, pity I'm not particularly good at it, I have a lot of respect for anyone who is good at that game. Wonder if Christophe plays it in reality... Knight Moves really is a 'must-have' for fans of Christophe and/or seriel killer movies, my one regret however is that we've never gotten to see him and Diane in a film where they are both in top form. Since she's a fairly big star now, maybe if he asked her nicely... of course the situation would be slightly different to their first two efforts, any movie they did now would be starring 'Diane Lane and Christopher Lambert.' |
