I was born in the small city of Nogales (almost 19o N, a bit more than 97o E), on July 3, 1970. I know that if you have already read my resum� you�ll notice the discrepancy about birthdates. This is actually easy to explain: my parents took me to the Registro Civil offices a bit too late and, in order to avoid a small administrative fine, they said I had been born a whole week later. I was a rather shy kid who would spend more time playing with construction sets (anyone else remembers those castle models, Exin, or the machines and robots from Tente?) than playing soccer after school. Thanks to my mother�s patience I started reading at about 4 and over time developed a great affection for books and the stories therein. I also caught hepatitis at about 6 and therefore had to spend a long time in bed �about a month-, my father thus buying every single coloring book he could find plus boxes and boxes of color pencils to keep me busy. TV wasn�t an option but exercising my imagination was.
As I grew up I had very strong influences (my father and both older brothers) that made me believe I should pursue a career in engineering. I entered the Orizaba Institute of Technology in 1988 where I finished four semesters of Electronics engineering. At the same time I had started studying English at the Language Center of the Veracruz University where then Coordinator Jane Freedman invited me to teach in the school; job opportunities like that were much easier to make and to take in 1990.
