Luftlage West:

 

7 planes of (F)122 started to reccon the North sea.

 

Dunkirk is confirmed to be the main disembarking harbor for british troops. From the 11.October on every day appr. 4 ships arrived there with troops and material. Some minor ports are also used. British troops also landed in Fecamp and St.Valery.

 

One Blenheim was shot down by german fighter over the mouth of the Wupper.

One enemy plane of unknown type was shot down by german fighter southwest of Köln.

4 Potez 63 shot down by german fighters south of Völklingen and at Saarlautern.

1 Do-17 was shot down by enemy fighter.

 

 

8.November 1939

 

An RAF plane which crashed in Cambridge Road, Middlesbrough, at 16.55 with total loss of personnel and machine, caused fires in three houses. One fireman is reported injured; no other civilian casualties. The aircraft mentioned by Home Security was Hudson N7290 from No 220 Squadron. The two crew were: Pilot Officer Augustus Ryan (pilot),Sergeant Rex Mitchell (second pilot), ACI Albert Wade (crew), with Pilot Officer Douglas Robertson on board as a passenger.

A plane of (F)122 lost the course because of ice-damage of the compass and flies over belgium territory but is not attacked.

 

10.November 1939

 

A Dornier Do 18 was brought down into the sea, ENE of Scarborough, by two RAF Hudsons of 220 Squadron. Of the crew of the enemy aircraft, one was listed as missing and the rest were picked up by Dutch ships.

 

A No. 87 Sqdn RAF Hurricane Mk. 1 (Serial no. L1619 - LK°P) flown by Flt.Lt. Horatio Dunn ran out of fuel after having engaged a german Dornier over Tourcoing, and force-landed in the Mouscron area in Belgium, slightly damaging the plane. Dunn was apprehended and imprisoned near Antwerp, escaping a few weeks before the outbreak of war.

German bombers attack targets on Shetland islands. Two british floating-planes destroyed.

 

Two Hurricanes of No. 87 Sqdn. RAF out of three trespassing Hurricanes force-landed on Belgian beaches near De Panne and Koksijde. Both pilots were interned with Flt. Lt. Dunn. The Hurricanes were repaired and transferred to the 2/I/2Aé at Schaffen, which flew this type of aircraft.

 

16.November 1939

 

A British Blenheim bomber belonging to No. 57 Sqdn. RAF at Amiens (F) crash-landed at St. Baafs-Vijve on the Courtrai-Ghent route. The crew was apprehended. The fate of the Blenheim is unknown.

20.November 1939

 

Nine He-59 planes of 3./906 drop air-mines near the Thames Estuary. Just four planes reach the target. The rest has to return because of bad navigation.

 

22.November 1939

 

A Heinkel HE.111, code 5j+FA of Stabstaffel K.G.4 at Quakenbrück-am-Rhein encountered two Curtiss Hawk 75 fighters of the French 1ère Escadrille du Groupe de Chasse 1/4 at Norrent-Fontes and in the ensuing dog-fight was shot from the air near Torhout. The pilot survived and was apprehended. His crew perished in the crash.

 

 

23.November 1939

 

Four french fighter are shot down at Sedan. One german fighter is forced to land.

 

28.November 1939

16.30 8-12 Bristol Blenheim (?) attack Borkum with machineguns. They attack from northwest to southeast hangars and planes on the ground.

1 W34 sea two hits, 1 Ne59 one hit, office buildings and hangars about 100 hits. One worker injured by bullet into the stomach, 1 worker slightly wounded on the arm.

German AA defense by 3,7cm and M.G.15 very short because alarm and attack were too close and the planes left at once over the Westerems.

Here the steamers „Asien“ and „Stadt Emden“ were attacked with no damage or casualties.

Boat 604 of 6.Hafenschutzflottille was hit 12 times with minor damage.

One 3,7cm did not work after the first shot and the second had no line of sight.

M.G.c/30 of Batterie Flughafen II fired 25 rounds without spotted effect.

 

29.November 1939

 

At 09.35 an german aircraft was shot down over the North Sea, five miles E of Amble. Acting on Admiralty instructions a motor boat and patrol vessels carried out a search of the vicinity but no survivors were found. This aircraft was a Heinkel He 111 of Stab/KG26 shot down by a Hurricane of No 111 Squadron.

 

Spitfires of 602. and 603. Suadron shoot down a He-111 over Lothian in Scotland. This is the first german A/C to be shot down over the island.

 

A Dornier Do 18 of 2/Küstenfliegergruppe 406 lost over the North Sea.
