v Between the years of 1347-1350, one third- 20 million people- of Europe's population died. Mortality rates ranged from 20-90%, depending on how densly populated the area was when the plague struck. In some places, such as rural villages, the lone survivors moved away & the villages faded away from existance.
Where to bury the bodies?
v Graveyards filled up quickly, leaving nowhere to have individualized graves anymore.
v Huge pits were dug & bodies were thrown upon other bodies.
v In some places, such as London, there were so many bodies that they literally overflowed the pit & were lying everywhere.
v In Avignon, bodies were throne into the Rhone river when burial pits were unavailable.
