- Miniskirts were all the rage in the
1960's, which infuriated the older generations. The skirts kept getting
shorter & shorter as time went on. Efforts to control the trend by
introducing a skirt called the 'midi', but that style proved to not be
as popular as the mini. The minidress also appeared during this time,
featuring stripes, waves, & Pop Art designs.
- The Paper Dress was a fashion trend durinng the 1960's which was
advertised as clothing that you could throw out after wearing a few
times without feeling guilty. First started as a gimick by Scott Paper
Company, the clothes stayed popular for over a year.
- The Topless Bathing Suit was an interestiing fashion trend. It started
as a joke & ended up becoming semi-popular, due in part to the new
freedoms that people were testing out & experiencing for the first
time during the decade. Women wearing such suits were frequently
arrested for indecent exposure.
- Twiggy, a British model, became very popuular. The tiny model, with
the unreal proportions [5'6" & weighing 90 pounds] was looked upon
as a fashion idol. Her success wasn't quite as grand in American as it
was overseas, however. Her clothing line did not do very well in the US
because although women would have liked to be the same size as her,
they were not willing to basically starve themselves in order to fit
into her creations. Even without the success of a clothing line, she
was still able to build a multi million dollar empire & become an
icon of the times.
- The Mod Scene, which included patterned sshirts & low-slung
hipster pants for men was popular for a short while, but fizzled out in
a hurry. Mod was all about being different, & when the clothes
became popular & everyone started wearing them, the scene suddenly
became what it had been trying hard not to become- this is why the look
didn't last very long.
- Other popular menswear items included thee Nehru jacket, which was
based on an Indian jacket, & turtlenecks. Long hair for men, based
in part on the Beatles' mop tops, was also considered to be very
stylish.
