To make the 3rd Saturday in July A National Holiday For Those Lost To
Drowning or A Water Related Accident "Water Safety &
Remembrance Day"
|
 |
World-wide half a million people die each year due to
drowning! Drowning knows no geographical boundaries and in the ages of 5
to 14 is actually one of the leading causes of death. Drowning can occur
anywhere from a small pool of water to ponds, canals and rivers to large
oceans. To date no concerted action has been established regarding global
drowning issues. Consequently, the World Congress on Drowning will be a
unique event for experts, organizations and institutions involved in water
safety.

| Drowning
Prevention Day! Please take a moment and remember those who have
lost their lives to drowning! |
There will be a Dutch Conference day (in Dutch) on 29 June
2002, the day after the international congress (in English), in the same
convention hall at the RAI in Amsterdam.
Project co-ordinator, Dr. Joost Bierens will present the
program: The day is targeted at those busy with everyday practice in
prevention, saving and treatment, such as public water management, water
sports’ organizations, swimming pool managers, fire-brigades, police,
rescue brigades, first aid, doctors, paramedics, government and
semi-government.
At least the following, well known three themes will be
subject of the Dutch Conference day:
- Prevention: safer open water in residential areas, and
preventive measures in swimming pools, on beaches, for the water sport and
for vulnerable groups such as youngsters and immigrants.
- Rescue: rescue on beaches, the sea and inland waters,
fire-brigade operations, divers, and the layman/passer-By.
- Intake and treatment: resuscitation, role of ambulance
personnel, use of defibrillating devices, warming techniques, recognizing
brain damage and other sicknesses after near-drowning
Special attention will be given to the prevention of
diving accidents and to the theme of ‘disasters’. The latter being of
interest after recent inundations in the Netherlands and after accidents
with ferryboats.

| Lifeguard
Effectiveness: A Report of the Working Group |
|
 |

This report, published
in October 2001 by CDC’s Injury Center, assesses
lifeguards as a strategy for preventing drowning and
water-related injuries. The product of an expert meeting
and a review of data from the United States Lifesaving
Association (USLA) and other sources, the report
will help communities, local government officials, and
owners of private water recreational areas make informed
decisions about whether to begin, retain, or discontinue
lifeguarding services.
