| It's not easy to find a success story as genuine as Mystick Spyral in popular culture these days considering all of the carefully manufactured icons built on hype instead of talent. If any of the bands in recent years can claim to have ascended strictly on its own merits, it's Mystick Spyral. This California-based band went from zero to sixty, (or more accurately, from zero to selling more than thirty million albums) by virtue of a combindation of finger-on-the-pulse songs and powerful performances. Their debut album Death Fetish (1992) has sold over six million albums to date. Mystick Spyral's sophmore effort, Feeding Frenzy (1993) debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and has gone on to sell more than 11 million copies. The band's third album Them Bones was released only five months later. Their fourth effort Night Terrors (1994) also debuted at #1, thanks to successful collaborations with The Walking Undead's lead singer Rodrigo, Madonna, and the Artist Formerly Known as Prince. By the time the group's fourth album Green Mile (1995) was released, Mysick Spyral had become a full blown phenomenon. And with the release of Buried Alive in 1996, the band made history by selling more copies in its first week than any other rock release that year, and tying the record for the longest run at the top following a #1 debut. "With Death Fetish, we knew we had enought talent to get a record deal and that our songs were good enough to get played on the radio, but no one would touch us with a ten foot pole," says Mystick Spyral's frontman Sef. "Finally our manager Bernie struck up a deal with Tin Can Alley Inc. who ultimated ended up producing the album. But I don't think anyone could predicted that we'd be as successful as we are today." Nonetheless, the band's success has been truly phenomenal. Mystick Spyral was the first band in history to have six #1 Rock Radio singles from a debut album. On the strength of their singles, including the cruising title track "Death Fetish" and the more pensive "Afterlife," Mystick Spyral topped countless year-end charts and was recognized as the Rock Artist of the Year at the Billboard's 1992 Music Awards. Their debut album was also the #1 selling Hard Music Album of 1992 on SoundScan's Hard Music chart. With the release of their second album, Mystick Spyral upped the ante yet again. "Six Feet Under," the first single from their 10-times platinum release, broke the Active and Mainstream Rock airplay records for the most consecutive weeks at #1, holding the coveted spot for nineteen weeks. Furthermore, Mystick Spyral was recognized once against as the Rock Artist of the Year at Billboard's 1993 and 1994 awards. Feeding Frenzy's first three singles ("Six Feet Under," "Book of the Dead," and "The First Bite is Free") again achieved #1 status, setting a record with a total of eight consecutive #1 Rock Radio singles. "We're the type of band that words real well under pressure. We're always trying to push the envelop, you know.
