No… rap did not die in the early nineties. Andrew E., one of the pioneers of
Filipino rap is back with a vengeance. And while his style has changed
little, he has, more than ever before, ventured into the risqué (heck at
some points it’s downright kinky!). Wholesome will not be heard over local
radio stations because of its suggestive nature.
In his latest album, Andrew
E. still maintains the down to earth lyrics he used when he won the nation
over with "Humanap ka ng Panget". In songs like "Top of the World", "You
Don’t Know Me", "T.I.P.A.R." and "Here We Go", Andrew and friends (his album
is supported by several up a coming rap artists like Sugar Walls, Jive
Turkey, Meanne Casal) take the time to bash critics, social climbers and
wannabes.
The rest of his album is, well… It turns out that Andrew only
scratched the surface when he released Andrew Ford Medina, Bb. Rocha and the
like all those years ago. Now while it’s arguably "all in the mind", you
have to credit him for ingenuity. In the last two songs of the album, Andrew
winged it. He and his featured guests made up the lyrics as they went along
and liked the end product so much they put it on the album.
At the end of
the day, he has earned the right to go detractor bashing because of his pure
creativity. The album is selling like hotcakes and all the man has to say is
"Believe me before, I used to be sikat, Now, popular na lang".
