Teachers, Senseis, Gurus and Nichiren

The term Sensei means teacher. For many people a "Sensei" isn't just a teacher, but a father figure, a "master", Mentor, "Guru", etceteras. This leads to much trouble in religion in general and Buddhism in particular.

The Buddhas teach us to rely on the Dharma and not on the person. Wonderful teachers are still human beings. Therefore teacher and student, when it is a long term relationship cannot forever be one way. Students need to "grow up." For more on this subject visit my page on mentors.

We owe a supreme debt of gratitude towards all of our teachers, our "sovereigns" such as Bosses, or the heads of states, and our parents. How we repay these debts of gratitude determines whether we allow them to become monsters or help them teach enlightened things. That is one of the themes of the Lotus Sutra and of the teaching of the "Three Powerful Enemies." Ignorant laymen "make" evil "twisted" teachers, because they blind themselves to their potential hubris and don't hold them to standards.
