Buckingham palace has over 600 rooms, although the Queen and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh live in only 12 of them in a suite overlooking Green Park. The palace is the official residence of H.M. the Queen, who as head of state hosts many state receptions inside. If the flag (the Royal Standard) is flying it means the Queen is inside the palace.
