Do you think it's possible to shut off parts of your brain?
Sigmund Freud believed that there were three parts to the mind.
There was the Id, which contains our deepest, darkest secrets. The Id is our inner spoiled brat. The Id just wants, and doesn't care how we get it, or the consequences of getting it. If we all followed our Ids, we'd be unemployed and/or in jail.
Then there's the Ego. The Ego is our true nature. The Ego is our personality; who we are around our friends and family. The Ego is also the part of us that knows what is truly right and wrong, so the Ego is our line of defense against the Id.
Finally, we have the SuperEgo. The SuperEgo is our Demeanor; our outward appearance to the world. The SuperEgo is the face we put on when we want to impress others and hide what we truly are. The SuperEgo does what is necessary for us to play nice with everybody. The SuperEgo is the foil of the Ego.
So, back to my original question: Can we shut off parts of our minds, to function in a completely different manner?
If we are to believe what Freud said about the human mind, most of us act with one facet of our mind for a majority of the time. We hear desires from our Id, filter it through our Ego, and keep it hidden with the SuperEgo. What bothers me is that most of us keep up like this, and then do something else under a guise to express what is deep down.
What I'm mainly talking about is what people do under the influence of alcohol. Alot of people know that alcohol impairs a person's mental faculties, so they drink alcohol, and then use it as an excuse to express what they're truly like.
So now, after all this ranting, we come to the part of the blog where we flash back to a topic I've taken up at some other time: Honesty.
Be honest with people. Don't wait until alcohol has been imbibed to show how you really are. Drinking only makes you slur the stuff you have to say. Just say what you think. Say what you want. Say the things you need to say. To bring up the immortal words of Steve Perry, while he was still with the band Journey; "Be True to Yourself!"
And now; now to heed my own advice.
