It's "The Producers", folks; a movie-musical based on a musical based on a movie about a musical("Everybody got that?"). I don't care if you don't like musicals, this is one you should see. And while it doesn't hold water to the original movie with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, it's hilarious nonetheless.
Just a quick note before I move on to the full blog. Remember folks, the latin word for "charity" can also be translated as "love"[Caritas]. Take whichever one makes you more warm and fuzzy inside.
Yes, I got my spiritual refill today. But out of the many things I heard in today's sermon, it's this that I want to focus upon today.
No matter what gifts that God has bestowed upon us, if we have not [caritas], we have nothing.
Today in church, I saw many couples. This is no coincidence. I myself have always felt that one of the greatest things you could share with a person is the restoring power of faith. But it wasn't the beauty of these couples, nor the children that they had with them, that I was ruminating over; it was their happiness.
No matter how much smarts, how much education, how much money, how much power: without [caritas], it matter not.
This is even expressed in popular music. The Beatles sang, "I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love." Eddie Vedder, of Pearl Jam fame, sang "Sorry is the fool who trades his love for a Corvette. Thinks he'll get the girl; he'll only get the mechanic."
It's [caritas], folks. [Caritas] is the answer. [Caritas] is the goal. [Caritas] is fulfillment.
And sure, you could say it's love, not necessarily charity; but even in Schoolhouse Rock, when they sang about the number three, they tied it in this way: "The past, the present, and the future; Faith and Hope and Charity; the heart, the brain and the body...somewhere in that ancient, mystic Trinity, you'll get 3, the magic number." So, because of that, I'll stick with my [caritas].
Human beings try to delude themselves into thinking that certain arrangements, certain materials, certain substances, can bring them happiness, joy, fulfillment. But there it is, spelled out for you, clear as day.
Normally, I don't put much truck in the bible, but it's got some pretty good stuff in there.
And so, following those passages, I saw how [caritas] is. [Caritas] suffers, and yet is kind; does not envy or flaunt itself. [Caritas] does not act like a jerk, search for praise, get easily ruffled and "thinketh no evil". [Caritas] is not contented with wickedness, but merely with truth(which is what I've been saying all along!).
And so today, I've put away childish things. Drama and pettiness is for high schoolers. And so I rose above all my feelings, past and present. I've changed things, and changed how I've acted. I'm changing for the better.
And as a parting gift to you, to tie in the two musical references I made above, allow me to quote another Pearl Jam song which invokes The Beatles; "It's already been sung, but it can't be said enough; 'All you need is love.'"
Gotta love [Caritas]
