"And The Hits Just Keep On Comin"

I decided last night, after the last weblog entry, that I would start off each weblog with a quote from a movie, and then leave it until the following one to tell you all which movie it came from. Well, at least I think it's a novel idea.

Today, my thoughts dwell on luck. Yesterday, I lamented for myself and other poor, unfortunate souls that seem to be without luck. Yet today, I pointed out to myself that I succesfully guessed the winners of Thursday's Orange Bowl and Rose Bowl(American Football, for those from outside the U.S.). Not only that, I picked the winner of today's late playoff game(Yay, Carolina!).

So, this leads me to ponder why one can have luck in one aspect of their life, and not in another.

I wish I had an answer to give, that way I could seem wise and omniscient.

To me, all luck seems to be extended by our Benevolent Creator from on high. For him, luck is just throwing us a bone. It evens out that karmic balance we have. For instance, while we may not have incured so much positive karma as to pick the winning lottery numbers(or negative karma, depending on your view), you can guess correctly when exactly the plumber is going to show up, or where your friend's car keys are.

Some people will tell you that you create your own luck, but they've been blessed by it all their lives, that they don't know shit. What you can do is even out your karma. For example, this same guy can be walking down the street, find $20 in the gutter, and five minutes later, get hit by a bus. Any good karma he had was wasted when he picked up the money. Of course, all the bad karma he had was wasted when he got hit by the bus.

I know karma, in the eastern religion way, doesn't work with a good and bad, and you certainly can't add to it, or subtract from it. But I never said this was the eastern religion way; this is the Chris way. Also, karma is relative. Just cause someone wins the lottery doesn't mean they had alot of good karma stored up. That windfall could put them in karmic debt, and the misfortune that follows them later could even out the imbalance that resulted. It all depends on how you look at it.

I've heard that not everyone gets what's coming to them, and if I live a bit longer, I can see whether that's true or not. However, we must remember that we don't have a window onto someone else's life. That aloof and unapproachable billionaire we see in the news all the time may have watched his mother die at the hands of some disease. That friendly guy at work, who never seems to get promoted despite his qualifications, may beat his wife as soon as he gets home. It's unfair for us to judge someone, especially since we detest to be judged ourselves.

This may seem contradictory to what I said yesterday(and I hate it to shit that I'm contradicting myself, because I loved yesterday's weblog), but maybe we're unlucky in love because of karma. Maybe we've done something bad and irreprehensible, and that's why we are alone. Or perhaps we've done nothing wrong, and we're just incurring a karmic debt which will be repaid when we find that someone special, and spend the rest of our lives together.

I described it today as a small, wellspring of hope, and that's all I'm doing now...hoping.
