Global History & Geography II IMPERIALISM PROJECT: TOPICS This project is meant to be adapted to your interests and talents. The topic(s) of your project can come from any information in Chapters 25 and 26. New Imperialism ( Chap. 25, 26): Imperialism, types of rule, causes and effects of Imperialism, Advantages and Disadvantages, �White Man�s Burden�, Social Darwinism, Scramble for Africa, Stanley and Livingstone, Berlin Conference, King Leopold and the atrocities in the Congo, Boer War, Shaka Zulu, Ethiopian resistance, Emperor Menelik, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Congo Free State, Middle East, Ottoman Empire, Young Turks, Armenian Genocide, Muhammad Ali, Iran, India, Sepoy Rebellion, British East India Company, Ram Mohun Roy, Indian National Congress, Muslim League, China, unequal treaties, Taiping Rebellion, Boxer Rebellion, Opium War, Sun Yixian, Meiji Restoration, Japan, Zaibatusu, Korean and The Hermit Kingdom, any other Imperialism related topic. VIDEOS In a group of up to 5 students, you can create a video of approximately7 to 20 minutes on a topic of your choice. These videos can also be done without film in that they can be written and acted out as skits in class as well. Some suggested formats could be: � A&E Type Documentary on a topic or overview, perhaps a Biography of a person complete with interviews, background, etc. � Newscast From the Past: a modern day newscast with a twist! The time period and location (s) are from the mid 1800�s and early 1900�s era of Imperialism. You should have at least 5 separate �news� stories, and at least 3 commercials, and/or public service announcements, also within this time period. Humor is encouraged, as long as the historical content is accurate. � Reality Type TV Show: could be done in the fashion of any current reality show: Survivor Imperialism, MTV�S The Real World; Imperialism, �Culture� Swap, Extreme Makeover: Imperialism Edition, The Amazing Race, Law and Order: Imperialism Intent, etc. � Talk Show: Interview David Livingstone, a Christian Missionary, Sepoys from India, the Boxers from China, etc. You could do this from the point of view of the Imperial Powers and/or the Colonized Nations. Dr. Phil, Oprah, Bill Mahr, Montel, etc. � Court TV: Put Great Britain, France, and other European powers on trial! You could even invite Judge Judy. � Infomercial: example�NOW, for a limited time offer�carve up the continent of Africa..if you act now we�ll throw in the Suez Canal!! (etc.) GAMES Individually or with a partner, create a game that involves the topic of Imperialism. It could be similar to game you are familiar with: Monopoly, Clue, etc. You can also create your own game. If you create a board game you should include: � Game board � Game pieces � Rules/Directions � other You can also create a computer game. Write and perform Music RESEARCH TIME We will be working in the library in school during the next few weeks on scheduled days, thus alleviating some of the need to do all of the research at home ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Included with your finished project should be the following: � Bibliography: must include at least 3 sources, one which should be a primary source � A one (1) page minimum typed description of your project, brief summary of your topic (s), and a few sentences on what you learned from doing this project.
