| A ABC - An Tir Book of Combat - A handbook for rules and regulations for all combat in the Kingdom of An Tir After-Revel - A party occasionally thrown after the scheduled event. Usually informal, in someone's home, generally people do not wear garb for this. Anachronism - out of place or time Anno Societatus (A.S.) - Year measurement used in the SCA. Each year is counted since the creation of the SCA, with the "New Year" on May 1st. Authorized (when referring to a fighter) - affirmation that the fighter has filled out the appropriate consent forms, that they understand the rules of the list. Also, authorization can be in different weapon styles, or types (such as Rapier, Heavy or missle combat). Autocrat - The person in charge of an event. B Bardic Circle - a formal or informal gathering for singing, storytelling and general merry-making. Boffer - a foam or padded sword used in childrens activities or for practice. (Please note that in Avacal there are rules, regulations and specifications for childrens combat) C Chatelain(e) - officer in charge of helping out newcomers (the person to ask for help when starting). Coronet - Refers to the Prince and Princess, or the event at which the tournament to choose Prince and Princess is chosen. Crown - refers to the King and Queen, or the event at which the tournament to choose the King and Queen is chosen. D Device - a heraldic symbol registered by an individual. F Favour - a personal item given to someone to indicate your favour (often fighters). Feast Gear - A place setting to be able to eat at a feast. This should include a trencher, a bowl, a gobelt, utensils, napkin, tablecloth, candles, and a covered candle holder. Feastocrat - the person in charge of preparing the feast. Filk - new words put to an existing piece of music. G Garb - The medieval and renaissance clothing that we were at events. Garderobe- a poliet reference to the loo Gold Key - refers to the collection of loaner garb, and other items for new people, or the officer in charge of keeping track of these items. H Herald - Book-herald - in charge of the written duties as herald such as help researching a name or device. Vox herald - 'the voice of the crown', help with annocements and court. Both must be experts in SCA protocol. I Investiture - The event in which the current royals steps down to turn thier reign over to the next in line. J Javelin - a type of thrown spear K Knowne World - The SCA world, currently composed of 17 Kingdoms, which covers most of the mundane world. L List Master/Mistress - officer in charge of keeping the order of the tournament, also handling waivers, and ensuring that the they have been signed by the participant and the proper officials. M Master/Mistress of Stable (MOS) - a branch offer in charge of combat (usually heavy combat). Minister of Arts and Science - Officier in charge of the promotion of the study and recreation of the medieval arts and sciences. Mundane - modern, not in the SCA. N Newbie - a newcomer to the SCA O On/Off Board - If you are On board you will be partaking of the feast. If you are Off board you will be bringing your own dinner. P Period - the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the era in which we use as a base for SCA activies. Can also be used as an ajective. For example: "Silk is period, but polyester is not". Q R Regnum - list of Society branched and officers. S Senechal(e) - the legal representative of the Society, in charge of running a branch of the Society. T Tanist and Tanista - the title of the winner of the coronette tournament (with his/her inspriation), until investiture where they are made prince and princess.
