Drawing I   Course Syllabus

Cheryl Howerton- Instructor          School Year 07-08                  Spring Valley High School

v    Class Description:        Welcome to Drawing I Class. This course is one of the recommended electives for Applied and Fine Arts Majors. Projects and assignments are designed to help prepare you for a future in the art field. You will develop basic skills in drawing such as shading and perspective plus developing more advanced techniques.

v    Goals and Objectives: During this class you will develop;

1. Rendering Skills

2. Perception Skills

3. Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving Skills

4. Creativity

5. Proficiency using various drawing mediums

6. Portfolio Development

v    Attendance & Make-up Work:       I encourage you to attend every day; it’s hard to make-up what you miss in class. When it is necessary to miss class, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. For everyday you are absent, you have that many days to make-up your work and hand it in (for example you are absent 3 days, you have 3 days to make-up your work). Make-up work can be completed at home or during lunchtime or after school.

v    Grading Policy:             Six Weeks grades are based upon the following;

o       1. Artwork- majority of the projects are worth 100 points each. Grade on artwork is based on effort, class participation, care of equipment and creativity.

o       2. Sketchbook- 6 sketches are due each 6 weeks. They will be worth 30 points (5 per sketch). The sketchbooks total 180 points for all year. Students will be given specific topics for their sketchbooks. They do have the option of creating their own topics but this must be done prior to the beginning of the 6 weeks.

o       3. Writing Assignments- You will learn how to use graphic organizers in developing ideas for your artwork as well as brainstorming. You will be writing critical analysis of your won artwork.

o       4. Related Reading Assignments- assigned readings will enhance your understanding of the style or technique being studied.

o       5. Final Exam- worth 10% of your final grade. It will be a portfolio presentation of 5 matted pieces of work and a written exam on techniques and mediums.

v    Incomplete Work:        If it becomes apparent that you are not going to finish your artwork on time, you must do one or both of the following; 1. take your work home; 2. come in extra time. You will only have one week extra to complete the assignment. After that I will evaluate your work based on the degree of its completeness and quality.

v    Discipline & Behavior: You will be expected to treat fellow students the same way you would like to be treated. I will treat you with the same respect you show me and the other students. It’s important to have patience and tolerance for each other’s ideas and opinions. This type of classroom environment helps to develop your creativity and talents as an artist. If this is too much to expect, there will be consequence.

The third exhibit is at the Huntington Museum of Art somewhere around April. Our school also maintains an exhibit of student work on the internet at Artsonia. The web address is www.artsonia.com/springvalley. It is my goal for every student to have a piece of work on this site. Last year we had 8,000 people view our work. You can also buy items with your students work on them. Artsonia gives 15% of that back to the art department. I will send home farther information on this site soon.

v    Contact: You may reach me at school during my planning which is fifth period. Please feel free to e-mail me with any concerns, questions or problems- [email protected]
